Anne Stiles received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2006. Her research interests include nineteenth-century British and American literature, history of science, history of religion, and children's fiction. Before coming to SLU in fall 2011, she served as Assistant Professor of English at Washington State University.

Dr. Stiles serves as Director of SLU's Medical Humanities Interdisciplinary Minor Program, English Department Faculty Liaison for the 1818 Advanced College Credit Program, and Victorian Section Co-Editor of Blackwell Publishing's online journal Literature Compass.

Research Interests:

Stiles's research explores intersections between literature, science, and religion. She is the author of Popular Fiction and Brain Science in the Late Nineteenth Century (Cambridge UP, 2012) and the editor of Neurology and Literature, 1866-1920 (Palgrave, 2007). She also co-edited two volumes published by Elsevier in 2013 as part of their Progress in Brain Research series. 

Most recently, Stiles was awarded a Robert M. Kingdon Fellowship by the University of Wisconsin--Madison. Stiles will spend the 2016-2017 academic year in Madison completing her second monograph, Recovering the New Thought Novel: How a Forgotten Literary Genre Influenced Psychology and Popular Culture. This book shows how popular fiction by Henry James, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and others spread awareness of the late-nineteenth- century religious movement known as New Thought, which promoted positive thinking as a means to health and prosperity. Her research has also been supported by awards from the Huntington Library (Barbara Thom Fellowship, AY 2009-2010) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Visiting Scholarship, AY 2006-2007).


Stiles teaches courses on Victorian literature, children's literature, and medical humanities. In spring 2015, she received an Innovative Teaching Fellowship from SLU's Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning, which supported the development of English 349: Public Health and the Victorian Built Environment. This class explored Victorian architecture, furniture, interior design, and public health issues through access to archives and Victorian house museums in the greater St. Louis area.
