Graduate Career Preparation and Placement
The English faculty works very closely with graduate students to prepare them for successful job searches. Each year, the department's Placement Committee organizes
- Workshops on career opportunities and effective strategies for seeking academic employment at four-year institutions
- A presentation for those interested in careers at community colleges
- Workshops in crafting effective letters of application and resumes
- A full schedule of mock interviews and trial job talks
Graduate Mentors and members of the dissertation committees also work closely with students to develop a strong record of professional achievement throughout their years at SLU, and to present that record most effectively in applications for particular positions.
An unusual feature of our program is that our graduate students also have the opportunity to learn about the academic hiring process from the other side, by serving on departmental hiring committees.
In recent years, the English department has had a high rate of success in placing our doctoral recipients in academic positions. See our list of placements.
