Student Educational Services (SES) fosters academic excellence among first-generation college students and those from low and modest incomes. SES hosts student learning and personal development activities, including those for the U.S. Department of Education's TRiO programs, for targeted SLU students and for St. Louis metro area junior and high schools.



Mission

Student Educational Services supports underrepresented students achieving academic success by helping them develop a sense of self, by encouraging them to engage with their community and by celebrating learning at all levels in order to further the mission of the Division of Enrollment and Retention Management and Saint Louis University.

Vision

To promote and maintain educational opportunity and success for students, particularly for first-generation, low-income students; students from underrepresented groups; and for students whose academic preparation may not have thoroughly prepared them for college success.

We encourage students and staff to build on their strengths, to develop a sense of educational responsibility and to become engaged in the community of learners so as to become men and women for others in the transformation of the world for the common good.

Student Educational Services seeks to be a leader in developing and implementing best practices in identifying, selecting and retaining students in our programs by keeping abreast of research into theory and practice in student retention as it relates to serving our students, families and our community.

SES Fast Facts


  • SES provides special programs such as Billiken Bridge to Success, Billiken First and TRiO.
  • SES Peer Mentor Program assisted more than 50 SLU freshmen and sophomores last semester.
  • In this past year, SLU's TRiO Program assisted more than 175 SLU students.

About Tim Hercules

Director of Student Educational Services and International Services

Tim Hercules joined the division of Enrollment and Retention Management in 2004. For several years, Tim served within the office of student financial services managing the counseling and outreach initiatives and provided support to families on financing an education at Saint Louis University.

Currently, Tim serves as the director of Student Educational Services and International Services. His teams support visa and immigration compliance, acculturation initiatives, study abroad, the Billiken Bridge to Success conditional admit program, and federal TRiO programs supporting students with disabilities and students from first-generation, low-income families. Hercules himself was a first-generation student.

Prior to joining Saint Louis University, Tim worked for Maritz Travel Company traveling to more than 40 countries and managing incentive and business meetings for Fortune 100 companies.

Tim holds a Juris Doctorate and Master of International Business degrees from Saint Louis University and has been honored for his work at the University with a SLUStar award.
