Work hard. Play hard. It's a mantra fitting of the Saint Louis University experience where students receive a holistic education of the mind, body and spirit. In light of the University's commitment to wellness, SLU provides first-rate recreational facilities and programs to help students stay healthy.

One of the University's newest recreational facilities is a new track and soccer field at SLU's Medical Center. Completed in July 2011, the Medical Center Stadium has become a hub of activity for students, faculty and staff. It is also the on-campus home of SLU's Division I track and field team. An eight-lane, 400-meter track rings an NCAA-regulation soccer field, providing additional space for organized intramural and club sports activities as well as a place for faculty, staff and students to exercise.

Hitting the Books and the Gym

After a busy day of classes, students can take advantage of the Simon Recreation Center, a 120,000-square-foot facility that was renovated and expanded in 2007. The $8 million project turned the SLU facility into one of the finest and largest university recreation centers in the Midwest.

The fitness center features more than 200 workout machines, allowing students to work up a sweat on high-tech treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair-climbers, upright and recumbent bikes and state-of-the-art strength equipment, including a full line of Nautilus machines.

Simon Rec also offers a multipurpose gym with elevated jogging track, racquetball courts, group exercise rooms, a juice bar, an indoor pool and a climbing wall. Open seven days a week, Simon Rec is one of the busiest spots on SLU's campus.

  • Basketball
  • Dodgeball
  • Flag Football
  • Golf
  • Indoor Soccer
  • Kickball
  • Racqetball
  • Sand Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Softball
  • Squash
  • Table Tennis
  • Volleyball

"Intramural and club sports provide opportunities for students who aren't a part of Division I athletics to stay involved with the sports they love while developing friendships with other students," said Eric Anderson, director of campus recreation. "Participating in recreational sports is a great way for students to unwind and connect with peers."

For those who like to kick up their heels while burning calories, the Simon Rec offers several dance classes each semester, including ballroom/swing, hip-hop and salsa.

The University also offers several group fitness classes, including aerobics, Pilates, spinning, Zumba, yoga and kickboxing.

"I have been taking a spinning class at SLU's fitness center," said senior Taylor Martin. "I love the environment, and it's nice that SLU provides another option for an added workout with great instructors."
