    • Have you seen the new bottle filling stations in the BSC? Look for this one on the main level of the BSC, next to the Cross Cultural Center and across from Grand Market. • Solar powered trash compactors, made of 97% recycled car parts, are being utilized for their eco-friendly impact and efficiency. We currently have 3 on campus
    • 1 - located near the Doisy Research Center (DRC), 1- located on the patio behind BSC & 1 located near the Village apartments).
    • The implementation of these compactors has been so successful that SLU's Grounds Services department is diligently working toward increasing the number on campus.
    • Solar powered trash compactors hold up to five times the waste of a typical container - and can reduce related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%.
    • A monitoring system notifies when full and the number of pickups necessary decreased, meaning reduced fuel use and lower greenhouse gas emissions, not to mention, less opportunity for overflow litter.

Our current STARS-based Waste Diversion Rate (% of solid waste that is kept from going to the landfill) is 15%. This figure includes single-stream recycling, yard and food composting, Distribution Services reuse program, and the move-in/out program - data from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
