Village Meter Competition
Junior Lauren McDonald came to the Facilities Services office wanting to get the word out to her fellow students about the importance of saving energy. Soon after the Village Electric Competition Team was formed. The team selected the Village as the perfect challenge location since the Village is all electric. Ameren Missouri was contacted and was eager to get on board as a corporate sponsor.
The contest began on January 18th. The electric usage for the past three years was averaged by month per apartment. The contestants with the greatest percentage of decrease would be the winner for that month. The monthly winners were awarded a prize, which included an ipod and kindle. The contestants with greatest overall decrease would be the grand prize winners. The grand prize was a ticket to the cardinal game with complimentary food and drink in the Ameren suite.
Zachary Schwartz had an overall 49% reduction and was the grand prize winner. Zach brought his father to the game and watched as Jaime Garcia took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. The event was so successful Ameren Missouri extended a ticket to all of the monthly winners.
To help learn how to save on electric, weekly tips were emailed to the 473 residents. Monthly education seminars were also held on sustainable topics. The competition slogan was "LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM". The Facilities Services and Residence Life departments enjoyed being a part of educating the students.
Tip of the Week: Install a programmable thermostat or adjust temperature when you are out of the house or on vacation.
