John C. Edwards, M.D., Ph.D., has rejoined the faculty of Saint Louis University School of Medicine as a professor of internal medicine in the Division of Nephrology and associate chairman for research. Dr. Edwards completed his doctoral work in biochemistry at the University of Chicago. He earned his medical degree also at the University of Chicago, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in nephrology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He rejoins SLUCare from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology, Dr. Edwards is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Edwards is an attending physician at Saint Louis University Hospital and has clinical expertise in general nephrology and hypertension, including inflammatory disorders of the kidney, acute and chronic kidney failure, inherited diseases of the kidney, and management of acute and chronic dialysis, with emphasis on problems of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base regulation.In addition to patient care and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Edwards has research interests in chloride channels, particularly the chloride intracellular channel (CLIC) family of chloride channels, their biochemical and physiological properties, and their roles in normal and disease physiology.
