Global and Local Justice Initiative
"Only a substantive justice can bring about the kinds of structural and attitudinal changes that are needed to uproot those sinful oppressive injustices that are a scandal against humanity and God." Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J.
The Global and Local Justice Initiative is an interdisciplinary, inter-school collaboration that undertakes projects to enhance understanding of conditions and processes that advance or inhibit social justice. The Initiative takes as its subject matter social and political structures that expand or impede material welfare, racial and gender equality, individual human rights, peace, and other components of a just society.
The aim of the Global and Local Justice Initiative is to help members of the Saint Louis University community extend their efforts on behalf of social justice beyond individual charitable impulses and toward the construction of a more just society. This aim is advanced though activities related to teaching, research, and service.
The Global and Local Justice Initiative is supported by the Departments of American Studies, Political Science and Public Policy, Sociology and Anthropology, the Doerr Center for Social Justice, the School of Social Work, the School of Public Health, and the Women's and Gender Studies Program.
