Dissertation Fellowship

The Saint Louis University Dissertation Fellowship seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars to undertake innovative and extensive research. Dissertation Fellowships are competitively awarded to Saint Louis University Ph.D. candidates whose work, during their time at Saint Louis University, demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and whose dissertation will significantly extend the body of knowledge within their discipline. Students interested in being nominated should contact their department or Ph.D. mentor.

About the Award

Each 11-month fellowship award carries a monthly stipend, up to 12 hours of tuition scholarship depending on the number of dissertation hours needed to reach the required 12, and health insurance. Summer enrollment, starting July 1, 2016, is mandatory. No other fellowship, traineeship, assistantship, similar appointment or employment at the University or outside may be held concurrently.

Students receiving this award may not exceed the maximum number of years (five) for funding unless the program allows a sixth year. Preference will be given to those applicants who have completed their prospectus the prior spring, summer or fall.

Eligibility 

  • Must have signed candidacy papers filed with the doctoral candidacy advisor before the application deadline
  • Must be nominated by the department
  • Must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and a proposed dissertation that will significantly extend the body of knowledge within their discipline

Diversity Fellowships

Diversity Fellowships are awarded to newly accepted master's or doctoral level students, or to students in the first year of a program, who demonstrate outstanding scholastic achievement and potential for success in graduate studies at SLU. Students are nominated by their program. Each program may nominate one student. Students interested in being nominated should contact their department of interest.

About the Award

Each 11-month fellowship award carries a monthly stipend, 18 hours of tuition scholarship during the regular academic year, 3 hours during the Summer session and health insurance. Summer attendance is mandatory. For newly admitted students, summer enrollment starts July 2017. For students who have completed one-year in a program, summer enrollment begins July 2016.

The award is for the maximum of two years for a master's degree recipient and four years for a doctoral degree recipient.

Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident 
  • Must be accepted as a classified (degree-seeking) graduate student at Saint Louis University 
  • Must be a new master's or doctoral student (an applicant may have been enrolled for no more than one semester previously in the degree program)
  • Must be nominated by the department chairperson
