Cathy Golden Scholarship Winner
Gabriella Rodriguez, a first-year master's student in communication sciences and disorders, is the 2014-15 recipient of the Cathy Golden Scholarship. The Golden Scholarship was established by Mary Pat Golden (Law '88) in memory of and in honor of her sister, Cathy, who was severely mentally handicapped. The Fund provides a financial stipend each academic year to a promising graduate student at Saint Louis University whose vocation is to work with handicapped children or adults, individuals with autism or the elderly. This year's scholarship award is for $2500 and six hours of tuition scholarship.
Ms. Rodriguez graduated Northern Illinois University (NIU) with a Bachelors of Science in Communicative Disorders, December 2013. During her undergraduate studies, she held leadership responsibilities and supported academic success as a teaching assistant. She worked with RSF-EARTHSPEAK, a non-profit organization that provides speech therapy globally for children who have received cleft lip and palate surgery. While with RSF-EARTHSPEAK, she had the opportunity to work with families in Mexico who lack medical and financial services. She also worked for Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA) as a inclusion companion. This position enabled her to gain hands on experience working with individuals with disabilities across a wide range of ages.
