270 Medical Terminology (3)
The goal of this course is to teach basic language related to medical science and health science professions; word analysis, construction, pronunciation, spelling, definition, and use of terms pertaining to anatomy, pathology, abbreviations and medical procedures. This course is taught in hybrid format; in which students obtain information from their textbook, Blackboard or supplemental materials provided by the instructor.
300 Introduction to Health Informatics (3)
This course is an introduction into the profession of health record administration. We will explore the origin, uses, and content of health records. The accreditation, certification and licensure standards applicable to health records will also be discussed. After a basic foundation of health information management has been established, we will discuss the evolution of the paper medical record to electronic healthcare, the role telemedicine plays in that evolution, the use of a personal health record in healthcare delivery, ethical and the legal issues surrounding e-health. In addition, we will explore and discuss the importance in determining the user's needs, evaluating risks, benefits and barriers to the system.
310 Medico Legal Aspects (3)
This course examines the US court system, legal terminology and legal procedures. Specific emphasis will be on healthcare legislation and regulations, including confidentiality, privacy, control and use of protected health information; professional and practice related ethical issues, informed consent, torts, negligence, and the legalities of the electronic and other health related documentation.
320 Health Data Management (3)
Descriptive and vital statistics; reporting requirements; definitions and formulas for computing hospital and public health statistics; epidemiology concepts, data abstracting and display techniques. Additional topics include case mix classification and analysis; meaningful use, exploration of an electronic record, techniques of sampling and weighted averages, introduction to data warehousing, data mining, and basic research principles.
330 Classification Systems I (3)
Introduction to nomenclatures and classification systems utilized in collecting, maintaining and retrieving specified clinical data in a variety of healthcare settings. Focus of course is using Current Procedural Terminology and Health Care Finance Administration Common Procedure System for coding hospital outpatient and physician office records. Ethical concerns in the application of coding and reimbursement principles will be emphasized. Format for the class is two hours lecture and two hours laboratory. Prerequisites: ANAT100, PPY254, HIM375. Majors only.
350 Health Care Management (3)
This course examines the challenges and unique opportunities of management in the health care environment including a study of the theories and concepts of management. This course will address a variety of areas in management, including managerial ethics, planning, organizing, decision making, directing, controlling, organizational structure, conflict management, leadership styles, communication, group process, team building and organizational change.
360 Health Information Management Theory and Practice (3)
This class builds on the content of HIM300, Introduction to Health Informatics by providing students an opportunity to synthesize knowledge for the design, maintenance, retrieval and uses of health data and health information. Prerequisite: HIM300. Majors Only.
375 Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine (3)
The course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic concepts of the diagnosis and management of common physical and mental illnesses. Presentations will focus on the clinical signs and symptoms of selected, common disease processes, the more commonly required procedures and tests needed to arrive at a diagnosis, and pharmacologic and other treatment modalities. Prerequisite: ANAT100, PPY254, HIM270. Majors only.
415 Quality Improvement (3)
Process for reviewing, monitoring and evaluating health care services; assessment through selection of quality indicators, monitoring opportunities for improvement, evaluation of effectiveness; LEAN and Six Sigma; risk management; utilization review; critical paths; tracking and profiling; tools of QI; and The Joint Commission standards for performance improvement
420 Research Design and Critique in Health Information Management (3)
This class serves as an introduction to qualitative and quantitative research. One of the purposes of the course is to enable students to become informed consumers of research published in health care and give students the skills to conduct research in their future careers. Critical evaluation of published literature is included in the course. The course will culminate in the completion of a qualitative research project. Prerequisite: STATS110.
430 Classification Systems II (3)
This course focuses on the ICD-9-CM coding system and its use in the health care industry. Students will apply ICD-9-CM coding principles to exercises, assignments and health records in a classroom laboratory setting. An introduction to ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and how to transition to the new system will be addressed. Prerequisites: ANAT100, PPY254 and HIM375. Majors only.
440 Clinical Data Analytics (3)
This course allows students to formulate a problem statement and implement a research design using existing clinical and administrative data to discover patterns in the data or to verify or disprove existing models or theories. Students will work under the direction of a faculty advisor. Projects will result In a formal report and presentation at the end of the semester. Pre-requisite: HIM420. Majors only.
450 Human Resource Management in Healthcare (3)
Focus on: job descriptions, staffing and scheduling, performance appraisals, counseling, training needs, wage and salary administration, interviewing techniques, laws related to human resources and labor organizations in health care.
451 Healthcare Financial Management (3)
Cost categories, product costing and cost allocation as it relates to health care; development and application of budget procedures and controls; productivity standard development; third party billing and reimbursement; legislation related to reimbursement; interpretation of financial data.
453 Professional Practice (3)
A 160-hour experience in approved health care facilities and related sites, projects are structured to process, design, implement and evaluate patient-related information system needs and departmental or other operations and services. Majors only.
461 Electronic Health Systems Management (3)
This course will allow students to apply computer technology and information concepts to the decision making process in the health care environment. Acquisition of systems, systems analysis, design, implementation and evaluation will be explored along with issues relating to system security. Systems found in health care will be reviewed. Present problems, limitations and future trends will be discussed. Throughout the course, the roles of an administrator, clinician and information manager in the analysis, development and implementation of systems will be emphasized.
498 Senior Seminar (3)
This is the capstone course for HIM majors. The purpose of this course is to assist the student in synthesizing the knowledge and skills developed during their course of study through the use of case studies and project work. Ethical practices will be discussed. Students will prepare for the credentialing exam. Alternative career opportunities will be presented. Majors only.
