Health Information Management Professional Performance Standards

Saint Louis University's Doisy College of Health Sciences is committed to full compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Qualified applicants to the Health Informatics and Information Management program within the College must be able to complete all requirements leading to the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management. This degree signifies that the holder possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to function as a health information management professional in a variety of positions throughout the health care industry.

The Health Informatics and Information Management student must possess certain competencies to successfully complete the program. These competencies include knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary for professional practice.

The essential program requirements outlined below are presented for applicants and matriculates to review and use as they assess their ability to perform all activities to successfully complete the degree requirements.

Candidates for the program must have the intellectual ability to learn, assimilate, analyze and integrate information and data. The HIM student must be able to:

  • Communicate effectively and sensitively in speech and in writing. Such communications may be with other health professionals, colleagues, instructors, staff and peers. Students must be able to speak and hear at a level which allows them to elicit and convey information.

  • Demonstrate visual acuity sufficient to read, analyze and report medical information from a variety of media such as paper records or computerized data.

  • Display a functional level of manual dexterity in the performance of computer keyboarding skills needed in the execution of software applications, manipulation of paper records, filing of reports and paper records.

  • Physically manipulate themselves within the classroom and clinical practice setting. At times, these setting can be small with aisle space around 30 inches.

  • Perform problem-solving tasks efficiently and within reasonable time constraints.

  • Comprehend and adhere to policies and regulations as prescribed by appropriate governing or regulatory agency.

  • Submit to and receive a satisfactory report on criminal background checks and drug testing for substances of abuse.
