Moving is exciting — and stressful. Knowing that, Saint Louis University tries to make the process of moving to and from campus as easy as possible.
If you’ll be returning to campus housing next year, you can even arrange to leave your packed items in your room at the end of the semester and find them waiting for you next fall in your new room.
With the exception of some student leaders and staff, most students arrive on SLU’s campus during Fall Welcome in August. For the 2018-2019 academic year, new first-year students move in on Thursday, August 23, and returning students will move in on August 24 and 25. If you are a first-year student you should plan to move in during your assigned time block as well. Early arrival requests were accepted through August 1, in the mySLU housing portal.
The basics — a bed, desk and clothing storage — are already in your room. From there you’ll make it your own. Coordinate with roommates on items you might share, like a TV or mini-fridge. SLU also partners with Bedloft.com to provide students with lofts, microfridges, futons and TV hangers. Students who place their orders by July 23 can have these items delivered to their rooms before move-in.
- Bring your SLU student ID and have it readily accessible.
- Dress comfortably with close-toed shoes. Plan for the weather.
- Pack your items in boxes that are large enough to reduce the number of trips necessary to your new room, but can be carried by one person.
- Label all of your boxes, plastic tubs and large items with your name, hall and room number.
- Bring the appropriate tools for any items that require assembly.
- Be patient.
- Stay hydrated.

You want your room to feel like home, but there are a few things we ask that you avoid due to possible damage to your room or apartment.
Housing and residence life staff will assess the condition of each residence hall and apartment space prior to move in. You will be provided with a copy of the inspection and asked to add any additional information. Before move out, your space will be inspected. If damage is found, you will be billed. Damage that is not claimed by one person will be split between all residents of the space.
- Don’t use double-sided tape, putty, duct tape or other substances that will leave a "gummy" residue on your door, walls or furniture.
- Use thumbtacks (no more than 10 per wall, please) on plaster and drywall surfaces. For cinderblock walls, use masking tape. Do not use screws, large nails or other implements to hang items. Do not put multiple holes in close proximity to each other.
- Do not hang wallpaper or anything else that will permanently adhere to the walls.
- Do not put anything on either side of your door that may leave marks or residue.
- Mirrors, extra shelves, hooks and other such items need to be removed at the end of the year.
- Residents who attempt to paint or make any repairs to their own rooms will be charged for repair by the university.
- Do not line drawers or shelves with adhesive-backed paper.
Important Housing Dates and Times
Below you will find important date information for Housing and Residence Life including residence hall and apartment opening and closing information. For the 2018-2019 academic year, please note that Grand Hall, Fusz Hall, Reinert Hall and DeMattias Hall all close for Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Spring Hall, Marguerite Hall, the Griesedieck Complex (Griesedieck, Walsh and Clemens), and all on-campus apartments will remain open for breaks.
Students will not be permitted to enter closed buildings during breaks and must make housing arrangements with family or friends during these times. Students will be able to leave their belongings in the room during break periods, but they may not reside in the space.

Where to Park
Each of the residence halls has an assigned parking lot where families will be allotted 25 minutes to unload their students' belongings. After that period, we ask that cars be relocated to the Olive Compton Garage.
Note that Laclede Avenue will be one way between Spring Street and Grand Boulevard for the duration of move-in. Students living in Spring Hall, Fusz Hall, Marguerite Hall, Grand Hall and the Griesedieck Complex are encouraged to approach their residence halls from Vandeventer Avenue (exits off Interstate 64 and Interstate 44), rather than Grand.
You will move out of your assigned space at the end of the spring semester. Students who are graduating, living in summer housing at SLU or have other extenuating circumstances can request a short extension.
You are expected to leave your room or apartment in as good or better condition than it was found. Failure to clean your space appropriately will result in charges, as will any damage. All personal effects must be removed, and failure to do so will also result in additional fees. SLU is not responsible for abandoned personal property.
Meet with your resident adviser before your move, then choose either the regular or express methods of checkout.
Regular checkout: Checkout of room with any resident adviser from your building, using the room or apartment condition inventory form on file.
Express checkout: Place your key in an Express Checkout Envelope and turn it in at your building’s service desk. Your room or apartment condition inventory form will be reviewed after you leave by housing and residence life staff. When using the express checkout option, you implicitly accept that review.
Cleaning the space upon move-out is the responsibility of everyone in the room or suite. To leave your room in the best condition possible, take the following steps:
- Remove all personal belongings.
- Vacuum and sweep floors. Dust wall trim and baseboards. Use a wet mop on hard surfaces.
- Remove scuff marks, spots and spills.
- Clean any dirt, hair, soap film or stains in the sink
- Scrub sink, tub and shower with disinfectant.
- Scrub toilet inside and out.
- Clean mirrors with glass cleaner.
- Remove tape, adhesive, stickers, posters and marks from walls.
- Wash down walls, light socket covers, A/C units and heater vents.
- Wipe down all shelves, surfaces and drawers, as well as window sills and blinds.
- Remove all garbage, and clean trash receptacles.
- Remove all food from refrigerator. Clean the appliance inside and out.
- Clean stovetop and sink, inside oven, under and around burners.
- Clean hood fan and vent filter.
