Dr. Borgmeyer has been named the new Director of the Center for International Studies. "It's really exciting because International Studies is one of the most dynamic and popular majors on campus. The students are diverse, talented, and engaged. Many of them are already becoming global citizens before they arrive on campus."
Borgmeyer, along with Program Coordinator Mary Wolf and Office Assistant Jane Beckerle, is responsible for maintaining a thriving academic program with nearly two hundred majors. "I've been teaching at SLU since 2006, and in that time I've had a chance to see what an important role the Center for International Studies has in the mission of the university."
Dr. Borgmeyer has taught in numerous other places in the U.S. and abroad, including Washington University in St. Louis, Webster University, and the Russian New University in Moscow. His areas of scholarly interest include Russian Modernist art and literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dr. Borgmeyer has lectured, presented, and published internationally, and he also serves as the President of the Central Slavic Conference.
Current scholarly projects include co-editing a volume on cultural identity in Russia and Eastern Europe and a handbook of Russian avant-garde art. He is also organizing an exhibition of early Soviet anti-religious propaganda posters in cooperation with Pius Memorial Library's Special Collections. In the classroom and beyond, Dr. Borgmeyer says, "I have always been looking to make cross-cultural and interdisciplinary connections - whether in examining how Russian artists use medieval icons to look at Picasso, teaching a class on globalization while in Mumbai, India, or helping a student to polish her first research presentation for an academic conference."
Dr. Borgmeyer believes SLU is a great place to do International Studies, with extensive study abroad programs, many opportunities for international education, a diverse student body, and the commitment of the university to educating students for an increasingly globalized world.
"I've been working in different aspects of international studies for over two decades," Borgmeyer says. "My whole development as a teacher and scholar has been international and interdisciplinary. It's great working with the students and faculty here at SLU and sharing what I know with them - as well as learning from them, too."
