Advanced Email Settings: Limiting users that students can send email to from a Blackboard class

Instructors may wish to limit student Email to the instructors or TAs in a course. Here are instructions for how to do that:

  • Click on Control Panel > Customization > Tool Availability. On the list that appears, scroll down to Email.  Click the ActionLink (small downward arrow) next to Email to access the Email Settings. You will see a list of blue check boxes next to different groups of users. Un-check all of the groups that students should not access and click Submit.

  • Now you can create a new menu item by clicking the plus sign at the top of the Course Menu. Choose Tool Link. Put a name for the link in the text box like 'Email the Instructors' and choose Email from the drop down menu. Check the box next to Available to Users and click Submit. You may verify how your link appears to students by using the Student Preview feature.

  • When you send an email as the instructor in a course you will receive a copy of the email sent to your SLU email account. This is your assurance that the email has successfully left the Blackboard system. If a student reports that they did not receive an email but you did, the issue would most likely be a setting in their personal mailbox that kept them from seeing the email, like forwarding or filters.
