 1.  How do I access Blackboard Learn

There are two ways to access Blackboard Learn.

Option 1:

  1. Open a web browser certified to work with Blackboard Learn. (Certified Browsers)

  2. Type in the following web address in the address bar at the top of the browser screen: http://blackboard.slu.edu. The Blackboard login page will appear.

  3. Enter your SLU Net ID and password.  The Home Tab page will appear.

Option 2:

  1. Login to mySLU with your SLU Net ID and password.

  2. Click on the Tools tab at the top of the page.

  3. On the Tools page click the Blackboard Learn icon. The Blackboard "Home" tab page will appear.

If you are unable to login to Blackboard or mySLU, go to http://password.slu.edu and follow the instructions to update your password. If this does not resolve the problem, call the IT Service Desk at 314-977-4000.

2.  How can I get access to my course on Blackboard Learn?

 

  • All courses that are created in Banner have a Blackboard course created automatically.
  • Courses created by Blackboard are unavailable (invisible) to students by default.

  • Instructors must make the course available (visible) to the students in order for the students to access it. (See "How do I make my course available to students" on the "Top Five FAQs" page.)

  • Even though a Blackboard Learn course is unavailable (invisible) to the students; Instructors, Teaching Assistants and Course Builders always have access to edit the Blackboard Learn course.

  • Courses for the upcoming academic year are added to Blackboard Learn in February.

Steps:

  1. Login to Blackboard Learn. (See "How do I access Blackboard Learn?" above.)

  2. On the Home Tab page, your courses will appear in the My Courses module.

4.  How are students enrolled in Blackboard Learn courses?

    • Students are enrolled in Blackboard Learn courses when they register for the course in Banner.

    • Students will not see the course in Blackboard until the Instructor/TA/Course Builder makes it available (visible) to them.

5.  The "My Courses" list is too long to use.  How can I manage this list?

 

Hide/Unhide Courses on the 'Personalize: My Courses Page

  • Any changes you make on this page only affect your "Home" tab page. Your students' "Home" tab page will not be affected by your changes.

  • On the 'Personalize: My Courses' page is a list of all of the courses you are enrolled in in Blackboard.

  • The courses on the 'Personalize: My Courses' page are grouped by your role:

    • Courses You Are Teaching
    • Courses You Are Building
    • Courses in Which You Are a TA
    • Courses in Which You Are Enrolled

Steps:

    1. Hover over the My Courses module and an icon that looks like a "cog" will appear on the right hand side of the title bar.

    2. Click the 'cog icon.' The 'Personalize: My Courses' page will appear.

    3. To hide a course in the 'My Courses' module, uncheck all of the boxes in the course's row.

    4. Click the 'Submit' button at the top or bottom right of the page.

    5. The Home Tab page will appear with only the courses you chose to be visible in the 'MyCourses' module.

    6. Go back to the 'Personalize: My Courses' page and check the box in the 'Display Course Name' column next to the course name to make the course visible again.

 6.  How do I change the order of my courses that are displayed in the My Courses module?

  • The course list can be rearranged by clicking and dragging a course up and down the role category it is in.

Steps:

  1. Hover over the My Courses module and an icon that looks like a "cog" will appear on the right hand side of the title bar.

  2. Click the 'cog icon.' The 'Personalize: My Courses' page will appear.

  3. Hover to the far left of the line with the course you wish to move. A small up/down arrow will appear.

  4. Click and drag the up/down arrow to move the course to where you want it within the role category it is in.

  5. Click the Submit button at the top or bottom right of the page.

  6. The Home Tab page will appear with the courses in the My Courses module in the order you changed them to.

7.  How do I give a guest lecturer/consultant to Saint Louis University access to my course?

 

You must be the Instructor of Record* to request a guest account.

Steps:

  1. Go to the ITS Guest Account Requests website.

  2. Fill out the request. It will take approximately 72 hours for ITS to generate the temporary account, so keep that in mind when you are planning your course.  ITS will send you and the guest the new account's SLU Net ID and password.

  3. Send the guest account information to facsupport@slu.edu and indicate what role the guest should be assigned to in your Blackboard course.  The guest will be added to the Blackboard Learn course and ITS will notify you that it has been done.

8. How do I group courses by Terms in the "My Courses" module?

    • Courses can be grouped together in your "My Courses" module by term. (This feature became available starting with the Summer and Fall 2014 terms. Courses before Summer 2014 will be grouped together as "No Term Assigned.")

  • Any changes you make on this page only affect your "Home" tab page. Your students' "Home" tab page will not be affected by your changes.

Steps:

    1. On the Blackboard Home tab, hover over the "My Courses" module and an icon that looks like a "cog" will appear on the right side of the title bar.

    1. Click the "cog icon." The "Personalize: My Courses" page will appear.

    1. To enable terms, check the box next to "Group by Term" at the top of the page and then click the "Submit" button.

    1. The "Home" tab page will appear with the courses in the "My Courses" module grouped by terms.

  1. To collapse or expand the terms in the "My Courses" module, click on the "arrow" to the left of the term. When the arrow is pointing right, the term is collapsed, and when the arrow is pointing down, the term is expanded.

9. How do I add students with incompletes to my Blackboard course?

Students with incompletes must be approved by the Registrar's Office before they can be added to a Blackboard course. Contact facsupport@slu.edu or call 314-977-2252 to initiate the process of adding these students to a Blackboard class.
