What you need to know about how Blackboard Learn works at Saint Louis University.

How Users Are Enrolled in Blackboard Learn Courses

Students

  • Students are automatically enrolled into Blackboard Learn courses when they register for them in Banner.
  • Students cannot be enrolled or unenrolled manually by the instructor. The student must add or drop the course in Banner.
  • If a student is dropped from a course in Banner because of an academic, financial, or medical hold, the student will be automatically unenrolled in Blackboard Learn and will not have access again until the hold has been released and the student has registered for the course again in Banner.

Faculty

  • Faculty are enrolled automatically in Blackboard Learn courses when their department enrolls them as an instructor in classes in Banner. If the faculty person is not enrolled in the course in Banner, it is up to the Department or the Office of the Registrar to remedy the situation.

Graduate Assistants, Teaching Assistants and Guests

  • Co- instructors, graduate assistants, teaching assistants, graders and guests may be added to a Blackboard Learn course. An e-mail must be sent from the instructor to facsupport@slu.edu requesting the person be added to the course and indicating what role they should be assigned.
  • Guests may be added to a Blackboard Learn course. The instructor must first request a Guest Account from ITS and once the account is created, send an e-mail to facsupport@slu.edu requesting the guest account be added to the Blackboard Learn course and indicating what role the guest should be assigned.  The entire guest access process can take up to 72 hours, so plan accordingly with your course schedule.

Staff

  • Staff may be added to Blackboard Learn courses. An e-mail must be sent from the Instructor of the course to facsupport@slu.edu requesting the staff member be added to the Blackboard Learn course and what role they are to be assigned. If a staff member is to have access to multiple courses, an e-mail must be sent from the department chair or program director.

Accessing a Blackboard Learn Course

Once you have logged into Blackboard Learn and are on the Blackboard Learn Home tab page, look for a box, called a module, titled "My Courses." In the "My Courses" module is a list of your Blackboard Learn courses. Click on the title of the course you want to access. The entry page of your course will appear.

There may be the words (not currently available) to the left of your course title.  This means the course is not available (visible) to your students.  Instructors, TAs and Course Builders can access a Blackboard course at any time.

Lifespan of a Blackboard Learn Course

The University wants to ensure that faculty members have the opportunity to retain any content they have created in a Blackboard course that they feel has potential future value for re-use. However, due to storage and performance considerations, the University must have a process for clearing out old courses from Blackboard. Therefore, in order to balance these goals, retention schedules have been created for the deletion of Blackboard courses.

Prior to any deletion, ITS will notify the instructor(s) of impacted courses so they have time to export or archive any course content they wish to retain.

Click on the following link for information on how to preserve course content:

Blackboard Course Retention Schedules

Below are the separate schedules for deletion of Blackboard courses, Blackboard courses with School of Medicine term codes, and Blackboard courses with Continuing Education term codes. The deletions will take place approximately four weeks after the start of the term listed in the schedules.

Please note that faculty development or organization/department courses in Blackboard are not impacted by this retention cycle; only Blackboard courses associated with Banner courses are deleted.
