Technical Overview

Saint Louis University's campus-wide wireless network is available at a variety of indoor locations throughout the University and also in several outdoor areas.

The wireless network provides portable, nomadic access to e-mail and the Internet on campus. Wireless LANs are only an enhancement to the existing wired network and are not intended as a replacement for standard wired networks.

Wired and wireless LAN technologies are complementary. Companies that utilize wireless LAN technology effectively overlay it with wired networks for maximum flexibility and performance. SLU is using the strengths of these two technologies together to provide the best combination of performance and flexibility.

Applications that require large amounts of bandwidth, applications that are latency sensitive, and any data that requires extremely strong security should not be used over the wireless network. (Examples include: voice and video, CAD programs, backup programs, Norton Ghost, multi-user online games, peer-2-peer file sharing, and multicast applications.)

The benefits of using wireless technology to support a more collaborative work environment are clear. Please carefully consider your requirements before relying on the wireless network for all of your computing needs. In most cases, the combination of wired networking performance and wireless networking flexibility optimizes collaboration and productivity.

The SLU Billiken Wireless network is designed with security in mind. All users (faculty, staff and students) accessing the wireless network are prompted for a username and password before access is granted. This function is accomplished by using the 802.1X authentication mechanism found in Windows XP or by using a commercial 802.1X client supplicant. In addition to the 802.1X authentication mechanism, SLU requires a VPN client when accessing certain information. The effective management of information technology resources is crucially important to the success of the academic and research missions of the University. Wireless networks require increased cooperation and coordination between campus entities to maximize the technology's benefits to the students, faculty, and staff and to allow connection to wireless networks in different campus buildings.

Non "SLU-owned" wireless access points, also known as "rogue" access points are not permitted anywhere on the SLU campus without approval from ITS. The ITS department will occasionally conduct sweeps of the wireless network to ensure there are no rogue access points installed. ITS reserves the right to turn off any rogue access points connected to the network without notice.

Compatible Wireless Cards:

On Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, ITS will be maximizing performance on the Billiken Wireless Network by removing outdated bands from broadcasting. Beginning that day, the 802.11b band will no longer be broadcasting for the SLUNet or SLUGuest networks. If your device only supports 802.11b, you will need to purchase a 802.11a/g/n USB client adapter to connect to the Billiken Wireless network.

The Billiken Wireless network supports three of the 802.11 protocols, depending upon campus location. The preferred, supported protocol is 802.11g. Most laptop computers, especially newer ones, come with an internal wireless network card installed. If your laptop does not have wireless capabilities pre-installed, you can purchase an external wireless card from most major electronic retailers. ITS recommends that you purchase a laptop with N capability, or if purchasing an external card, a quad mode card a/g/n for maximum flexibility.
