  1. How do I check my voice mail?

    You can check your voice mail from your own office phone, from another office phone on campus or from a phone outside of SLU. Follow these instructions:

    • From your office phone: To log in to your voice mail from your own office phone, access the dial tone and press the Message button. The voice prompt will request your mailbox number. Press the # key. The voice prompt will request your password. Enter your password then press the # key. Listen to your messages and retain, forward, or delete as desired.

    • From another office phone on campus: To log in to your voice mail from another office phone on campus, dial 76245 (7-MAIL). Enter your mailbox number (the last five digits of your phone number) and press the # key. Enter your password then press #. Listen to your messages and retain, forward, or delete as desired.

    • From a phone outside of SLU: To log in to your voice mail from a telephone outside of SLU, dial 314-977-6245 (MAIL). Enter your mailbox number and press the # key. Enter your password then press #. Listen to your messages and retain, forward, or delete as desired.

  2. How do I record an external, internal, or temporary greeting? (Note: If your telephone number begins with 577 or 268, please call 314-577-8000 to request voice mail instructions.)

    To record an external, internal or temporary greeting:

    1. Log in to your voice mail and enter 82.

    2. Press 1 to record an external greeting; press 2 to record an internal greeting; press 3 to record a temporary greeting.

    3. Press 5 to begin recording your message.

    4. Press # when finished recording.

    5. Press 2 to listen to the recording. Press 83 to exit your mailbox or press 76 if you want to delete this recorded greeting, then press 5 to re-record.

      When recording a temporary greeting, this message will override the external and internal greetings for a specified timeframe (it does not cancel them). After following steps 1-5:

    6. Press 9  to enter an expiration date and time.

    7. Listen to the voice prompt and enter the expiration month (1-12) followed by #.

    8. Enter the day followed by #.

    9. Enter the time followed by #. Press 1 for a.m., press 2 for p.m.

    10. Press 83 to exit your mailbox.

  3. How do I record a personal verification?

    A personal verification is a brief message that will be played in advance of any voice mail that you leave for others in the University system. To record your personal verification, follow these steps:

    1. Log in to your mailbox and enter 82, then 9.

    2. Press 5 to record your personal verification - say your first and last name and telephone number, then press #.

    3. Press 2 to listen to the recording. Press 83 to exit your mailbox or press 76 if you want to delete this recorded greeting, then press 5 to re-record.

  4. How do I change my voice mail password?

    1. Log in to your voice mail box and press 84.

    2. Enter your new password (must be between four and 16 digits).

    3. Enter your new password again.

    4. Enter your old password and press the # key.

      Please note: SLU requires that you change your voice mail password at least every 90 days. The voice mail system will notify you when your password is going to expire. However, you may change your voice mail password as often as you want. The new password *must* be different from the previous password.

  5. How do I forward a voice mail message to another SLU office phone?

    SLU's voice mail system allows you to forward a voice mail message from your mailbox to another mailbox on campus. You also can record an introduction to the original message. To forward a voice mail message:

    1. Listen to the message, then press 73 to forward.

    2. Enter the mailbox number that you want to forward the message to and press the # key.

    3. To record an introduction, press 5. Wait for the tone before speaking. When you are finished recording, press the # key.

    4. To send the message, press 79.

      Please note: If your mailbox is full or the mailbox that you're forwarding to is full, the voice messaging system will not let you forward the message.

  6. How do I send a reply to a voice mail message?

    To record a reply message to a message sender:

    1. After listening to the message, press 71 to reply to the sender.

    2. Press 5 to record your reply. Wait for the tone, and then record the reply message. When you are finished recording, press the # key.

    3. To send the message, press 79.

  7. How do I return a call from a voice mail message?

    After listening to a voice mail message, you can automatically place a call to the sender of the message if they called from a University telephone (or from an off-campus local number with a valid caller ID). After listening to the message, press 9 to call the sender. Your phone will automatically dial the number that left the message.

  8. How do I "tag" a message as urgent, private, etc?

    After recording a voice mail message, press the # key, then press 70. Press the following keys to "tag" and send a message:

    • Urgent delivery - Press 1. A message tagged "urgent" will notify the recipient of this when the message is played back.

    • Private delivery - Press 4. A message tagged "private" cannot be forwarded to another mailbox.

    • Acknowledgement delivery - Press 5. A message tagged for "acknowledgement" will send a notification to the sender when the recipient listens to the message.

    • Timed delivery - Press 6. A message tagged for a "timed" delivery can be composed in advance to be delivered at a later date and time (up to 10 days).

    • Send the message - Press 79.

  9. How do a remove a "tag" from a message before sending?

    Before sending a message you have tagged, you can remove the tag by following these steps:

    • To retag from urgent delivery to standard - Press 2

    • To remove a private delivery tag - Press 4.

    • To remove an acknowledgement delivery tag - Press 5.

    • To remove a timed delivery tag - Press 6.

  10. How do I use "express messaging"?

    You can use "express messaging" for a call to be sent directly to a recipient's voice mail (without their telephone ringing). To do this, dial 36246 and the mailbox number you want to leave a message in. Press #, record your message, then hang up.

  11.  How can I change the number of times my phone rings before going to voice mail?

    The standard number of rings before a call goes to voice mail is three. But, you can alter this depending on your personal preference. Follow these steps: 
    • For three rings - Dial 199151550

    • For four rings -Dial 199151551  

    • For five rings - Dial 199151552

  12. How do I log out of my mailbox?

    To log out of your mailbox, dial 83 and then hang up. This feature immediately releases your mailbox from the system and locks your mailbox.

  13. How do I log in to my voice mail after leaving a message for someone?

    After you have left a message for someone else, you can log in to your mailbox without hanging up. After you have finished leaving your message, press # and then press 81. Follow the voice prompts for logging in to your mailbox.
