JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary: Under direct supervision, is responsible for the detection
and reporting of safety hazards on University property; enforces University regulations;
investigates and reports criminal offenses committed against the University; assists
members of the University community and visitors to the campus.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include any and/or all of the following:
- Patrols assigned areas on foot to guard against theft, or illegal entry of University
building, identifies trespassers on University property.
- Provides information, directions and assistance to visitors, students or employees;
apprehends and questions suspicious individuals on University property and reports such
persons to the communication officers; may request and receive assistance from protective
service officers or department supervisor.
- May arrest and/or detain persons committing offenses against the University or the
University community with the permission of, or by direct order from a department
supervisor.
- Conducts inspections and submits reports of violations of University regulations,
crimes, risks and safety hazards in University buildings and property; investigates
misdemeanor criminal offenses committed against the University and submits appropriate
reports.
- Investigates and submits reports concerning all personal injuries and accidents, or
vehicle accidents occurring on University property.
- Locks or unlocks University buildings according to scheduled openings/closings; enforces
University vehicle traffic and parking regulations; may be assigned as a member of a major
investigation team, crowd control unit, or special tactical unit.
- Provides initial fire suppression, rescue techniques, and crowd control at the scene of
fires; responds to fire and non-intrusion alarms on University property, and may act as a
secondary response to security intrusion alarms on University property.
- Provides initial emergency medical care as needed.
- May be authorized to carry a baton or aerosol tear gas dispenser or other non-lethal
weapon with the direct authorization of the director; may provide protection, safety or
escort services for visiting dignitaries or special guests of the University as a member
of a security team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

- Ability to satisfactorily complete a training program as prescribed by the department
within a six month probationary period, and an annual in-service training program
- Ability to complete Pressure Point Control Training (PPCT)
- Ability to work any of three (3) permanent shifts, or for a specific period of time, or
any required overtime, to meet University and/or department needs
- Ability to read and comprehend written policies and directives
- Ability to comprehend and follow verbal orders and instructions
- Ability to extract data from conversation and documents
- Ability to compile reports which are factually and grammatically correct
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, and perform vehicle jumpstarts
- Ability to operate electronic parking ticketing machine
- Ability to operate hand-held radio, portable fire extinguishers, and basic electronic
alarms
- Ability to assist injured/handicapped persons in use of wheelchair, and/or getting in
and out of vehicles
- Ability to assist medical staff with any necessary patient restraint
- Ability to remove unconscious persons from buildings during evacuations
- Ability to assist with arrests, operate handcuffs, and use police baton
- Ability to move furniture short distances, lift and carry objects up to 65 lbs., walk
and stand for an eight-hour shift, sit for long periods of time during an eight-hour
shift, and run at a steady pace for one city block
- Must have normal vision (with/without the use of corrective lenses), and hear and speak
suitably for normal conversation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience equivalent to:
Must be over 21 years of age, and possess a high school diploma; supplemented with
related work experience in a position that involved high interaction with the public. Must
possess and maintain a valid private security license as established under the guidelines
of the St. Louis City Police Department. Requires passing physical fitness testing, psychological screening, and drug screening upon hire and throughout employment. Missouri residents must possess a valid Missouri
Class E operators license; Illinois residents need an Illinois Class D drivers
license. Job offers are contingent upon all requirements being met and licensures obtained prior to beginning work. In addition, a Motor Vehicle License Reference check is required prior to start date.
