FIG Instructor Expectations
The degree of integration within the FIG depends upon the course and FIG type (see LC Fundamentals for an overview of FIG types). For linked FIGs, integration among courses is explicit and reflective of the LC/FIG theme. For the other FIG types, intructors will determine the level of integration. This flexibility is intentional and allows faculty/departments to determine how best to meet the goals of their own classes, while still participating in FIGs.At a minimum all FIG instructors will:
- Demonstrate awareness of their course in relationship to the FIG and Learning Community theme.
- Be willing to share course materials (e.g. syllabus, etc.) with other FIG instructors in their FIG (the internal Google site lists all FIG instructors and corresponding contact information).
Ideally, instructors will integrate the theme in ways that suit the intellectual aims of the course(s)
Planning & Preparation
Given these varying degrees of integration, different FIG instructors will plan their courses differently. FIG Instructors have access to two important resources to supplement their course development process:
- Faculty & Staff Resources: This public site has general information for understanding the program on an informational level.
- FIG Instructor Resources: These pages are a part of the internal, Google site for Learning Communities. This site contains semester-specific details and more comprehensive teaching resources accessible once instructors are confirmed as teaching within one of our FIGs.
To prepare to teach in a FIG, instructors should:
- Be able to answer the "Are you ready?" questions in the New FIG Instructors section.
- Connect with fellow FIG instructors (May-July).
- Participate in planning for the FIGs Orientation (August).
FIG instructors are invited to our annual April Event where they are introduced to the other faculty, staff, and student staff involved with teaching and supporting the program. Attendees receive a snapshot of the current progress and development of the program and get to hear about best practices from a panel of students, staff, and faculty involved in the program. Prior to this event, FIG Instructors should be able to answer the "Are you ready?" questions in the New FIG Instructors section. This year's event will take place on April 13 from 4-5pm in the Sinquefield Stateroom of Duburg Hall.
Resident Hall Coordinators (RHCs) will call stakeholder meetings to be held 3 times a semester. FIG instructors are expected to attend as often as possible given their schedule. Stakeholder meetings allow members to discuss student performance both in and out of the classroom, share ideas for integrating the theme into in and out of class sessions, and provide instructors with ideas of what happening within the LC that may affect the course.
August FIG Orientation
FIG Instructors are strongly encouraged to attend the FIG Orientation in August. Students who enrolled in a FIG as part of the Learning Community experience move in a day earlier than the general population in order to participate in "FIGs Orientation". The orientation consists of a brief formal program and is then followed by a session facilitated by available FIG instructors and professional staff. The Learning Communities program provides guidance on what to do and how to prepare for the 1 hour session with instructors and their students on the internal Google site. The orientation provides an opportunity to introduce students to course concepts early on and begin building relationships even before the first day of class.
