Introducing PubMed: The Tutorial

This tutorial was developed by Assako Holyoke, M.D., Ph.D., M.S.L.I.S. and Gregg Clark, Ph.D. at the Saint Louis University Medical Center Library (MCL).

To work through the tutorial follow the links at the bottom of the page and/or the instructions within the text. If you want to skip from one section to another, use the navigation links to the left. However, be aware that questions for the quizzes and final exam will be taken from anywhere within the tutorial.

In this tutorial, emphasis will be given to the use of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). MeSH are a distinctive feature of PubMed and are the most effective means to retrieve the vast majority (>90%) of biomedical article citations indexed in PubMed.

At some points you will be able to interact with content on the page and this will be denoted by the presence of a green box with instructions, like this:

  • Click on the History tab above to access the History page search box

In addition, at various points red boxes will be present to indicate explanatory text, like this:

  • Linked MeSH terms, used to label and index article citations, are displayed along with other labels.

Open a second browser window and link to PubMed from the link on the MCL home page (http://www.slu.edu/libraries/hsc/index.html).  Practice what is shown in the tutorial with the live PubMed search interface to reinforce what you are learning.

Start the tutorial with the link below and discover the power of PubMed.

Enjoy and have fun learning!
