The Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) learning module is designed by the Medical Center Library for first year medical students at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
Objectives:
The objective of this EBM learning module is for students to become acquainted with the basic principles of EBM. A good understanding of the EBM concept is essential in the current practice of medicine and it relates directly to the skills of literature searching as you seek for the highest evidence level of clinical studies to apply to a patient's problem. The basic skills
of a literature search is essential for finding EBM literature. Knowing well searching engines such as PubMed to retrieve relevant information of high level of evidence is primarily important for the practice of EBM.
Goals:
Upon completion of this online module, you will be able to:
define EBM
identify the principles of EBM
identify the steps for the practice of EBM
develop a well-built clinical question
identify the four types of clinical questions
identify the type of clinical studies appropriate for the type of clinical questions
given a patient case scenario, construct structurized clinical questions using the PICO format
develop effective search strategies to identify EBM literature of the highest evidence level available by applying literature searching skills
learned in PubMed tutorial
