How to Find an Article
Ask a Librarian

Please be aware that NOT all of the journals that the Medical Center Library subscribes to will be available electronically.  For some journal titles, you may need to come to the HSC Library or Pius Library to make a photocopy of the article.
  1. If you already know the journal title.
  2. Approach 1: Through E-Journal Portal

    • Click on the Journals link on the left-hand side of this page.
    • Click on the first link E-Journal Portal which is the "master list" of all of the journal titles that are available electronically through SLU.
    • Type the journal title in the search box.
    • Locate your journal and check to see if the date range for the electronic version covers your article’s date.
    • Click on the appropriate link. For many e-journals, there is more than one link for access. These multiple links indicate the different e-journal providers/vendors for each journal. You may choose any of those links.
    • If you are accessing the journal from a computer that does not have a SLU IP address, you will be asked to enter your SLU e-mail’s Username and Password on the proxy access page. You should then be able to pass through to the vendor’s site.
    • Each publisher or vendor may have a slightly different access method for their articles. Some you can enter the author or keywords to retrieve your article. Some may list the journal issues by date and then in a table of content format.

    • If the article you need is not covered by the date range

If the journal does not appear in the Electronic Journal list
(How to see if the Library owns the hardcopy of the journal)

      • Click the Library Catalog link on the left-hand side of this page.
      • In the "Quick Search" box, choose "SLU-HSC Catalog" (default), and "Journal" (default).
      • Type the journal title in the search box, then press the "Search" button.

Approach 2: Through Medical Center Library’s catalog

    • Click the Library Catalog link on the left-hand side of this page.
    • In the "Quick Search" box, choose "SLU-HSC Catalog" (default), and "Journal" (default).
    • Type the journal title in the search box, then press "Search" button.
  3. If you want to search the MCL Journal collection by subject or keyword:
    • Click the Library Catalog link on the left-hand side of this page.
    • Click the Medical Center Library Catalog link.
    • Click Advanced Search in the center of the page.
    • Type the search term(s) in the search box. You may choose a field from the drop-down menu of the search box or leave it as "Any Field".
    • You can also limit your search by choosing these limit options.
      • Ignore "Library", since you are looking for holdings in the Medical Center Library.
      • You can choose a certain language to narrow your search to those journals written in that language by choosing the drop-down menu "Language".
      • Choose "BOOK/JOURNAL" from the drop-down menu in the "Material Format:"

    • Click "Submit".
  4. If the Medical Center Library does not own the journal that you want:
    • Unlike searching books, you DO NOT need to search other libraries in the MOBIUS catalog systems.
    • As long as the Medical Center Library does not own the hard copy of the journal and there is no electronic version of that journal available in E-Journal Portal, you can make an Interlibrary Loan request to obtain the journal article.
    • Choose "Title" from the drop-down menu on the left of the search box. Choose "ALL Locations " from the drop-down menu at the far right of the search box.
    • Our Interlibrary loan service is called ILLiad. You can access it by clicking on the Interlibrary Loan link on the left-hand side of this page.
