Public outreach is a vital function of any archives or library as it attempts
to fulfill its service mission and generate support for its needs. Important,
too, in an academic environment is the fostering of research in special collections,
which exist to be used. To attain these goals, archives and libraries must make
their holdings better known to their immediate communities as well as those farther
removed from the institution. In the St. Louis Room, a regular schedule of
exhibits has proven to be a popular way to accomplish this objective. Exhibits
highlight collections of papers and objects from the archival collections as well as
volumes from the rare and special books library. Exhibits are generally mounted
for two months beginning in January around the middle of the month.
