On April 11. 2001, renowned auctioneer Christie's of New York hosted its Magnificent
Jewels Sale. At this event the last remaining Cartier gems held by Saint Louis
University were ushered into the hands of new owners. In fond farewell to these
glittering pieces of the University's Cartier Collection that have moved on in space
and time, the University Archives is highlighting the beautiful books in its collection
that capture the mystique of such wearable art.
Visitors to the St. Louis Room of Pius Memorial Library can study the history, jewelry
design, and manufacturing techniques of the great House of Cartier as well as compare
the product of the Cartier workshops with the output of other master jewelers such as
Boucheron, Faberge, and Tiffany. Those seeking entertainment can simply enjoy the
innumerable pieces of "eye candy" offered by glorious color images of artists"
sketches and finished jewels, and can view photographs of some of the world's most famous
gems as worn by royalty and movie stars.
These most exquisite volumes in the Archives collection are a tribute to sheer beauty
and the romance of precious stones throughout history.
