Library Visits for High School Classes

Scheduling

We are happy to schedule library tours and classroom instruction sessions for high school classes desiring to use Pius Library for research purposes. To schedule a class visit to the Library, complete our Library Instruction Request Form for High Schools.

Please have several possible dates in mind and submit your request at least two weeks in advance. The Library is a popular and busy place, so we need to coordinate activities in order to avoid undue congestion in the building. We do not offer library instruction sessions during the last few weeks of our semesters--mid-November to mid-December and mid-April to mid-May--in order to minimize stress for SLU students who are studying in the building. We can accommodate groups of up to 30 students at one time. If you would like to bring more than 30 students, you must arrange two or more separate visits.

Prepare for Your Visit

Library resource guides for high school students are often used during library instruction sessions. They’re listed below and at the top of our Resource Guides page.

Research Strategies    Literature    History    Math    Science

High school students may search the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog before coming to campus to maximize their time in the library. They will have access to subscription library databases (used to find articles) in the library when they visit.

Library Location

Located on Lindell Blvd. one-half block west of Grand Ave., Pius XII Memorial Library is the general research library of Saint Louis University. The Library is open to the public, and visitors in need of library services are always welcome. For security reasons, everyone is required to show a photo ID upon entering the building.

Directions

Parking

Visitor parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in a restricted area located on the east side of the Laclede Parking Garage or on all levels of the Olive Parking Garage except the east end of the first level. Garage parking is $1.50 per hour (maximum of $25.00) or visitors may purchase a $4.00 parking coupon when leaving garage (See http://www.slu.edu/campusmap/printable.html for map.) Metered parking is also available on Lindell and on Laclede. Parking for buses is available in the Fordham Lot, behind Reinert Hall.

Borrowing Privileges

Students currently enrolled in a class in the 1818 Advanced College Credit Program may check out four library books at a time by presenting their 1818 cards at the circulation desk. Books are due back in 3 weeks and may be renewed at the circulation desk or, if not overdue, by calling 977-3087. Overdue fines are 10 cents per day, accumulating to $5.00. If a book is not returned, the student will be charged a $120 replacement fee and his or her transcript will be withheld until the account is cleared.  Please see Courtesy Borrowers' Loan Periods, Renewals, and Fines for additional information.

Students not currently enrolled in a class in the 1818 program do not have book borrowing privileges. Pius XII Memorial Library is a member of the InfoPass network, but materials may be borrowed only by college students who attend a four year college/university or a community college.

Copy Cards, Printers, and Photocopiers

During organized library instruction sessions, prints may be sent to the UnipriNT stations located in the Learning Commons on Level 1. To photocopy, they may use our one coin-operated photocopier on Level 2. Coin-operated photocopies are 15 cents per page. Students may also email or save articles onto their own flash drives. These options vary with the various databases and computers.

Students need 1818 ID Cards with "Billiken Bucks" to print from computers for 9 cents per page and to make photocopies for 9 cents per page. Photocopiers are available on Levels 1, 2 and 4 and Level 3 of Lewis Annex. Microform reader/printers are on Level 2. Two to three weeks before your visit, please contact Parking and Card Services, (314) 977-2957, DuBourg Hall, Room 33, to arrange for pick-up of 1818 ID cards if your students do not already have them. Money may be encoded on each card for printing and photocopying using the Billiken Bucks machine in the Library's Lobby.
