| Description |
The Technical Services Department is responsible for the acquisition, organization, bibliographic and authority control, and physical processing of materials, as well as collection and database maintenance for Pius XII Memorial Library and the Medical Center Library. |

| Purpose |
Under general direction, provide accurate bibliographic, authority, and item descriptions of materials by creating and maintaining records in the SLU and OCLC bibliographic databases using AACR2-R, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, traditional and emerging metadata standards, and local policies and procedures. |
|
| Characteristic Duties |
- Perform original and complex copy cataloging, classification, series and subject analysis for monographs, serials, electronic resources and non-book formats in all subject areas, according to AACR2-R, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and other local and national standards.
- Participate in database maintenance and quality control for bibliographic, item, holdings, and authority records in the SLU database.
- Perform authority work according to full NACO standards.
- Participate in evaluation and implementation of standards for access to digital collections and other electronic resources, and provide access to these collections using non-MARC descriptive metadata standards such as MODS and EAD.
- Assist in developing of cataloging policies of the library; assist in revising and implementing policies. Prepare cataloging documentation as needed.
- Serve as a resource person on matters pertaining to cataloging and database maintenance in the department and library.
- Participate in the activities of department and library by serving on committees and planning teams as needed.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by Unit or Department Supervisors.

Qualifications |
- ALA-accredited MLS.
- Experience with bibliographic utility such as OCLC and an integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces preferred) for cataloging in an academic library.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of bibliographic and authority control and experience with AACR2-R, Library of Congress classification and subject headings and MARC 21 formats.
- Awareness of current trends and developments in cataloging and metadata schemas.
- Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
- Familiarity with principles and practices of database maintenance.
- Experience and interest in cataloging serials and electronic resources desirable. Prior experience with NACO desirable.
