Development Director - Saint Louis University Libraries



Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, healthcare and service.  SLU Libraries is seeking a dynamic, innovative professional to lead the development and implementation of a unified strategy for expanding and cultivating the Libraries’ relationships with donors, prospects, Friends of the Library, and others; and to coordinate Library efforts to obtain grants and other philanthropic support for critical needs.
  


JOB DESCRIPTION

Under administrative direction, the Development Director for the Saint Louis University Libraries identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards major gift donors; develops fundraising strategies; serves as development liaison; supports budgets, goals, and strategic planning for the University Libraries of Saint Louis University. S/he works closely with the Assistant Provost for University Libraries, Development Office, and others to ensure optimization of all fund raising opportunities and campaign priorities.  
  

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include any and/or all of the following for the Libraries of Saint Louis University.
  1. Identifies, cultivates, and solicits philanthropic support by developing and maintaining relationships with corporations, foundations, and individuals including alumni, patients and their families, physicians, faculty, staff, and other key personnel; fosters positive and enduring relationships that produce reciprocal benefits.
  2. Develops fundraising strategies and methods or activities to ensure proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship of donors; participates in developing campaign materials, case statements, and brochures; evaluates effectiveness of development programs and securing gifts at various levels; generates reports.
  3. Coordinates with library staff their appropriate involvement with donors interested in specific library activities.
  4. Explores funding opportunities that coincide with the library’s strategic plan and the University’s interdisciplinary focus (e.g.: technology enhancements, academic department and program support, research collection development, etc.)
  5. Builds working relationships and serves as development liaison to schools and colleges, clinical departments, deans, department heads/directors, and other key personnel to achieve successful fundraising; nurtures culture of philanthropic support.
  6. Supports the preparation of annual budget and program projects, strategic planning, and goal evaluation.
  7. Oversees maintenance of files and records of development activities involving identifying, cultivating, soliciting and tracking gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, volunteer activities, and administration of the program.
  8. Participates in professional development organizations (i.e., CASE, DORAL, JAA, ALADN), committees, boards, and meetings; travels locally, and out-of-town as necessary; may serve on volunteer boards as requested; prepares call reports in a timely manner.
  9. May supervise staff; participates in special projects and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience equivalent to

  • Bachelor’s degree; supplemented with five (5) years of related experience.
  • Experience with higher education fund raising
  • External relations (stewardship and public relations) experience in libraries or non-profit cultural or educational institutions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with strategies for private academic library fund raising and building new donor constituencies.
