These two sections of the United States Copyright Office, provide a place to begin looking for ownership of books, music, films, and computer software.  The Registry only contains materials in 1978 or later.  They are only a place to begin since there are no reporting requirements when copyrights are sold or transferred.  See also, Circular 22:  How to Investigate the Copyright Status of a Work.
