Digital pilot project from Duke University that contains images from the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History's  "Competitive Advertisements Collection" from the J. Walter Thompson Company Archives.  Contains over 7,000 ads from primarily U.S. publications dating between 1911 and 1955.  The purpose of this project is to make historical advertisements available for research and study.

Encyclopedia Smithsonian: Photography

Contains searchable and browseable images from items in the Smithsonian Institution's collections.  Images are in color and are accompanied by information about the item such as size and history.
 
Forestry Images

Includes pictures of silvicultural practices, forest plants, forest pests, wildlife, invasive organisms, diseases, people, places, and scenes.  Images are copyrighted by either the University of Georgia or the agency or photographer providing the picture.  However, "the images may be copied and used, in whole or in part, for any non-profit, educational purpose provided that all reproductions bear an appropriate credit and copyright notice."  Access to images with 1536x1024 resolution or better requires registration that is currently free.
 
Great Buildings Collection

Provides photographic images, architectual drawings, and live 3-D walkthroughs of buildings and monuments in history around the world.  Additional software, "Design Workshop Lite" is required for 3-D-walkthrough viewing.

The History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine provides over 60,000 images scanned from its print and photograph collection.  Provides search and browse methods to find an image on a particular topic.  Use must comply with U. S. Copyright law (Title 17, United States Code).
   
Nobel Foundation Plant Image Gallery

From the Samuel Roberts Nobel Foundation, this site is aimed at persons who need to identify plants, specifically botanists and ecologists in addition to students and teachers.  Currently includes images for 600 vascular plant species primarily found in Oklahoma and Texas.
