There are many "Meta-sites" with links to reference resources organized by subject and type of resource such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, abbreviations, etc.  Some of these are listed below.

"Your Gateway to Quality Educational Resources".  Browse or search this collection of Internet sites arranged by academic discipline and selected for college and advanced high school students.  Each entry is selected and briefly annotated by Mike Madin, library specialist at Gallagher Law Library, University of Washington.  Links include "online publications, language and study aids, reference materials, databases, archives, virtual libraries, tutorials, as well as other educational materials."

The Encyclopaedia Britannica site, includes a list of Web sites for each search in addition to excerpts from articles in the encyclopedia and selected articles from popular magazines.
Note:  As of February 11, 2002, this site pops up numerous additional windows containing advertising.

INFOMINE:  Scholarly Internet Resource Collections

This collection of scholarly resources on the Internet is divided into nine major categories:  Biological, Agricultural, and Medical Sciences; Government Information; Instructional Resources: K-12; Instructional Resources:  University; Internet Enabling Tools; Maps & GIS; Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computing, & Math; Social Sciences & Humanities; and Visual & Performing Arts.  It is a project developed and maintained by the Libraries of the University of California--Riverside although it was cooperatively created and is maintained by "over 20 librarians from the University of California, California State University and other colleges and universities."  (text from site 1/22/01)
 
Internet Public Library (IPL)

Begun in 1995 by a class of library science students at the University of Michigan, it was "the first public library of and for the Internet community".   It is still an "educational initiative of the University of Michigan School of Information" and is currently funded by Bell & Howell Information and Leaning.

UT Library Online:  Useful Reference Sites

Provides links to lists of major Internet reference sources such as dictionaries, news and newspapers, statistics and demographics, telephone and e-mail directories as well as a single alphabetical list of Internet resources useful for quick reference.  Some resources are available only to UT-Austin ID holders.
 
Scout Report

Published every Friday, it is part of the Internet Scout Project located in the Computer Sciences Department of the University of Wisconsin--Madison and funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  The Scout Report selects, describes, organizes, and catalogs (using Library of Congress Subject Headings) Internet sites of interest to students, faculty, and staff in K-12 and higher education as well as the general public.
