This guide identifies resources for Mineralogy found primarily in the Reference Department of Pius XII Memorial Library.  Call numbers pertain to locations within Pius XII Memorial Library.  This guide is not comprehensive; rather it should be supplemented with several other guides for Pius Library such as GeoSciences.  Pius Library is a depository for United States Government Documents, which are a rich site for geological and mineralogical information.  Unfortunately, most of these are not listed in our online catalog. Check with the Reference Desk for assistance in locating Government Documents.

FINDING GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

Pius Library is a depository for United States Government Documents, which are a rich site for geological and mineralogical information. Some, but not all, government documents are listed in our online catalog there are several ways of searching for them.  Many will involve checking with the Reference Department eventually.

1) Search the SLU Libraries Catalog for "all locations."  If you find a government document listed at a different library, check at the Reference Desk to see if Pius Library owns the title.

2) Search the GPO (Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications) for government publications since 1976.  Then check at the Reference Desk to see if Pius Library owns the title.

3) Check Guide to USGS geologic and hydrologic maps [Pius Stacks Z6026.G3 G84] for relevant titles.  Then check at the Reference Desk to see if Pius Library owns the title.

FINDING BOOKS USING LIBRARY CATALOG

Search the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog, the SLU electronic library catalog, and MOBIUS, the Missouri Union Catalog, by author, title, keywords, author-title, subject, etc.  Use in the library or by remote access.  The Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is available from Pius Library's Home Page.  Tip:  Always search Saint Louis University first.  If needed item(s) is/are not found, extend the search to MOBIUS.

Try subject headings like those listed below.

MINERALOGY PETROLOGY
RESIDUAL MATERIALS (GEOLOGY) ROCKS
ROCKS, CRYSTALLINE ROCKS, IGNEOUS
ROCKS, METAMORPHIC ROCKS, SEDIMENTARY
ROCKS, SILICEOUS

Add a state or country location, such as ROCKS Missouri.  Also try the name of a particular earthquake or fault, such as NEW MADRID.  Please remember that only major earthquakes and faults that have been well research will have their own subject headings.  Not finding a subject heading does not mean that there are no books in the library on your topic. Contact the reference desk if assistance is needed.
