This guide identifies basic resources for poetry studies. The materials are located in the Reference Department on Level 1 of Pius XII Memorial Library or are available via the Web. The guide is not comprehensive; rather, it should be used as a starting point for research for undergraduate students at Saint Louis University.

This source indexes poems that have been published in books of collected and selected poems by major poets. Use it to find out who wrote a poem, what poems have been written on a given subject, or where a poem has been published.

Poets' Corner
Looking for the full text of a poem online? Check this site. It's limited to past copyright poems and poems that the authors had permission to publish, but you may find what you're looking for.

Representative Poetry On-Line
This site features approximately 2,500 English poems from the Old English period to today. It also includes online literary criticism, Canadian poetry, and a glossary of poetic terms.

Sonnet Central
Use this site to find non-contemporary English-language sonnets, classic essays on the sonnet, an annotated bibliography of critical works on the form, and sonnets about sonnets.

Browse the literature section of this first rate humanities site by period to find electronic poetry texts and criticism or use the site's search engine.

Indexes books, book chapters, dissertations and articles from over 4,400 journals in language, linguistics, literature, and folklore.

Humanities Full Text - 1984-present
Indexes and/or abstracts over 600 humanities periodicals. Full text is available from approximately 230 journals.

JSTOR
This archival journal resource provides access to the full-text of over 500 journal titles, including many literature journals. Note that the last 1 to 7 years of each journal are not available in this resource.

Project Muse
This electronic journal collection provides full-text access to over 250 scholarly journals, including many literature journals.

Modern American Poetry
This University of Illinois site is a great resource for those studying modern American poetry. It features poetry excerpts, criticism and biographical and historical information.

Napierkowski, Marie Rose, ed. Poetry for Students: Presenting Analysis, Context and Criticism on Commonly Studied Poetry. Detroit: Gale Research, 1998-.

Look up a poem in this source to find an introduction to the poem and poet, the text of the poem, a summary of it, analysis of the poem's themes and a discussion of the literary techniques demonstrated in the poem.

Poetry Criticism. Detroit: Gale Research, 1991-.

Features excerpts of poetry criticism as well as biographical information on poets and lists of their works.

Find poets' biographies and photos, poems, and audio files of poets reading their own work.

Provides biographical information on over 100,000 writers (including poets). Entries may include the following information: addresses, awards and honors, memberships, writings, interviews, photographs and lists of biographical and critical sources. Find the most current entry on an author by using the cumulative index.

Dictionary of Literary Biography. Detroit: Gale Research, 1978-.
The following volumes of the DLB feature biographical and bibliographical information on poets and include photos. Although they are part of a series, they are shelved separately in the reference collection by call number.
