This guide identifies print and online resources for political science, public policy, and legal studies found primarily in the Reference Department of Pius XII Memorial Library. This guide is not comprehensive but it does cover a wide variety of sources frequently required by library users.

Pius XII Memorial Library subscribes to many electronic resources that are restricted to Saint Louis University staff, students, and faculty. These resources are accessible via remote access through Pius Memorial Library's Web site.

FINDING BOOKS USING LIBRARY CATALOG


Search the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog, the SLU electronic library catalog, and MOBIUS, the Missouri Union Catalog, by author, title, keywords, author-title, subject, etc.  Use in the library or by remote access.  The Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog is available from Pius Library's Home Page.  Tip:  Always search Saint Louis University first.  If needed item(s) is/are not found, extend the search to MOBIUS.

DATABASES, INDEXING AND ABSTRACTING SERVICES


ABI/INFORM Complete.  1971- .  ProQuest.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated daily.  Indexes and abstracts more than 2,500 journals and trade publications in all areas of business and management, many with an international focus.  Full text is available for nearly 2,000 of the periodicals in page image (PDF) or text.  Examples of areas covered are accounting and taxation, banking and finance, economics, government, health care, human resources, labor relations, marketing, public administration, real estate, etc.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO). 1991- .  Columbia University Press. In-library and remote access.
    CIAO is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals, and policy briefs.

Gale Virtual Reference Library.  Thomson Gale.  In-library and remote access.
    A collection of almost 400 reference books (February 2007) that are searchable together or title by title. Subjects covered include, but are not limited to history, literature, law, technology, and biography.

Gallup Brain.  1935- .  Gallup Organization.  In-library and remote access.
    Public opinion database which provides a searchable record of the "136,000 questions and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed by The Gallup Poll since 1935." In addition, access is provided to "Gallup Poll News Service articles, Gallup Poll Tuesday Briefing articles, and Gallup Management Journal articles."

HeinOnline.  William S. Hein & Co., Inc.  In-library and remote access
    A comprehensive collection of U.S. law journals and other legal materials that are completely searchable. Currently contains "four major library collections: the Law Journal Library, the Federal Register Library, the Treaties and Agreements Library, and the U.S. Supreme Court Library.

Homeland Security Digital Library (HSDL).  In-library access.
    The HSDL collection provides quick access to important U.S. Policy documents, presidential directives, and national strategy documents as well as specialized resources such as theses and reports from various universities, organizations and local and state agencies.

ICPSR.   In-library and remote access.
    A vast repository of social science data sets for research and instruction. Disciplines represented include political science, sociology, economics, history, education, gerontology, criminal justice, public health, foreign policy, and law.

Index to Legal Periodicals.  1981- .  H.W. Wilson.  In-library and remote access.
    This database provides citations to scholarly articles from over 600 legal periodicals in addition to symposia, jurisdictional surveys, court decisions, legislation, books, and book review.

JSTOR.  John Hopkins.   In-library and remote access.
    Access to the full-text of nearly 600 selected journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences; three to five year delay in publication; an excellent source for scholarly material and theoretical background. Includes 41 political science journals.

Lexis-Nexis Academic.  In-library and remote access.
    Provides online access to full-text of current and historical court cases, law journals, current codes and bill tracking for states and the United States, news sources, transcripts, business information, and international news and company information. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Lexis-Nexis Congressional.  In-library and remote access.
    Access to U.S. legislative information including legislative histories from 1970, full text of the Congressional Record from 1985, National Journal from 1977, Congress Daily from 1991. In addition, there is a bill tracking file, full text for bills, selected committee prints, congressional testimony, committee reports, and voting records in Congress.

Military & Government Collection.  1963 - .  In-library and remote access.
    Provides indexing and abstracting for over 450 military and general interest magazines in addition to 245 full-text pamphlets and full-text country reports from CountryWatch. Full text is available for approximately 300 of these publications.

Oxford Reference Online.  Oxford University Press.  In-library and remote access.
    Reference books from Oxford University Press including 180 reference titles such as the Oxford Companion to Politics of the World, subject dictionaries, foreign language dictionaries, and illustrations from the Visual English Dictionary.

PAIS International.  1972- .  CSA.  In-library and remote access.
     Updated monthly.  Produced by the Public Affairs Information Service, this database indexes and abstracts books, journal articles, conference proceedings, reports, pamphlets and government documents covering topics that are or may become the subject of legislation.  Subject areas include economic, political and social issues, public administration, law, business and political science.  More than 1,600 journals published worldwide in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish are selectively indexed each year.

Project Muse.  John Hopkins University Press.  In-library and remote access.
    Full-text access to over 250 scholarly journals published by John Hopkins University Press and over 20 other not-for-profit presses in the areas of humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.

U.S. Congressional Serial Set with American State Papers.  Readex.  In-library and remote access.
    This digital version of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set contains U.S. Senate and House of Representatives reports, documents, and journals. Content is multidisciplinary covering political, social, cultural, and military history, international relations, and business and industrial development.

Web of Science.  1995- .  ISI.  In-library and remote access.
    Includes thousands of research journals from hundreds of disciplines. You can perform a cited reference search by cited author, cited journal title, or cited year or do a general search by author, journal title, or address such as institution name, city, country, or even zip code.

World Political Science Abstracts.  1975- .  CSA.  In-library and remote access.
    Indexes and abstracts "the international serials literature in political science and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration/policy."

    Updated annually. Produced by the World Bank, this database provides more than 500 time series for approximately 207 countries spanning various time periods from 1960 to 1998. Statistical series cover social, environment, economic, market and global indicators as well as population projections. This is a companion to World Development Indicators (Ref HC 59.15 .W656).
