KNOW YOUR FACTS

When refining your topic and writing your research proposal it is important to know the key facts and issues related to your topic.  In addition to the resources listed in the "Choose Your Topic" section, the following resources can help you find reliable facts and figures on almost any topic.  The sources on the previous screen are a good place to start, but also consider these.

Statistical Abstract of the United States - Comprehensive compilation of statistics gathered by the U.S. Government.
Current edition at Reference Desk; earlier print editions at SuDoc C 3.134:
     Also available online at http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/

Subject specialized encyclopedias - These encyclopedias focus on a specific issue or discipline.  To find them you can try

a Subject (Library of Congress) Search in the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog.  For example,

  • women encyclopedias

a KeyWords Search in the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog.  For example,

  • women and encyclopedias

Also, the English A190 Resource Guide lists selected encyclopedias.

Ask a reference librarian - Your English A190 librarian or any of the librarians at the reference desk will be happy to inform you of the best reference tools for your topic.  All you have to do is ask.
