EVALUATE WHAT YOU FIND
   
Evaluation of sources is a crucial part of the information seeking process. As you search for books, journals and Web sites on your topic, ask yourself the following questions regarding quality and appropriateness of materials:  
 
CRITERIA BOOKS & PERIODICALS WEB SITES
Authority
  • What are the author's credentials that qualify her/him to write on this topic?
  • Who is the publisher (academic or commercial)?
  • Can the author of the page be determined?
  • Is contact information provided?
  • Is the author's affiliation or credentials provided?
Currency
  • What is the publication date?
  • Is it current or out of date for your topic?
  • Is there a newer edition of the book?
  • Is the information current or out of date?
  • Is the date of most recent update included?
  • Do the links on the page connect?
Validity/Accuracy
  • Can you verify that the information is accurate or valid?
  • Is the source of information provided?
  • Is the source of the information provided?  
  • Can the information be verified for accuracy?
Audience
  • For whom was the resource written?
  •  What is the depth of coverage?
  • For whom was the Web site created?
  •  What is the depth of coverage?
Point of View/Bias
  • Does the author have a bias or agenda?  
  • Are the author's goals clearly stated?
  • Does the author have a bias or agenda?  
  • Are the author's goals clearly stated?
  • Is there a disclaimer included in the page?

SELF TEST:

You find a Web site that seems perfect for your research on endangered species.
