University Health Plan

Medical coverage is available to all Saint Louis University students, graduate assistants and medical residents through the University Health Plan (UHP), a self-insured health and medical care cost coverage plan sponsored by SLU.

The plan has no pre-existing condition exclusions and there is no waiting period. Dependent coverage is also available for eligible participants.

Enrollment and Changes to Plan Elections

Eligible participants and their dependents may enroll or request changes to plan elections (e.g. drop/waive coverage) within 31 days of admission to a Saint Louis University program, during a program's orientation, or during open enrollment and special enrollment periods.

Enroll or Waive Coverage

Special enrollment periods are provided when a qualifying event occurs. (Learn more about qualifying events.) If you do not complete enrollment or plan election changes within 31 days of the qualifying event, you must wait until the next open enrollment period.

Medical and Prescription Drug Benefits

The UHP partners with Aetna Student Health to administer medical and prescription drug benefits. Aetna's responsibilities include identification card production, medical coverage verification, claims processing and prior-authorization/pre-certification.

Contact Aetna Member Services at 877-381-3544 for general questions or Rx Member Services at 888-792-3862 for prescription benefit assistance.

Identification Cards

The UHP also partners with Aetna Student Health to assist with plan administration and identification card production. Once enrolled with Aetna Student Health, members receive an Aetna identification card via U.S. mail that should be presented when receiving both medical and retail pharmacy services.

New health insurance identification cards are sent to members annually. Members may also print identification cards online. Please note that the member's Banner ID number and date of birth will be needed to print an identification card.
