Saint Louis University

Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care

The Saint Louis University School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care is composed of clinicians, educators and scientists who are committed to quality education and clinical care. Our physicians can be found throughout the Saint Louis area, including at Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, the Anheuser Busch Institute and at  several outpatient surgery centers associated with the SSM Cardinal Glennon system.

Our department offers complete adult and pediatric anesthetic services, including subspecialty trained faculty in critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesia, transesophageal echocardiography and pain medicine.

We also provide specialized anesthetic care for patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, solid organ transplantation and outpatient surgery. We offer our patients advanced options for post-operative pain control, including epidural anesthesia and peripheral nerve blockage.

Our physicians serve as educators and academic scientists, training tomorrow's anesthesiologists in the department's residency program, along with nurse anesthetists and anesthesia assistants from other programs. A wide variety of clinical cases and a growing research program provide ample opportunity for both clinical and basic science research endeavors. Our research interests vary from the basic sciences to clinical care.

In all of these roles, we strive to fulfill the department's mission to provide the highest quality health care to our community, distinguished by compassion, innovation, education and research.

New Fellowship Offered in Pediatric Anesthesia
The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care has received ACGME accreditation for a one-year fellowship in pediatric anesthesia. This fellowship is open to candidates who have completed or are near completion of a residency in anesthesiology. The fellowship is one year in duration and includes exposure to advanced cases in pediatric peri-operative care.

Election rotations in the pediatric intensive care unit, the neonatal intensive care unit and the emergency department are also available during this 12-month exposure.

This is the first sub-specialty fellowship for the Department of Anesthesiology. Pediatric anesthesia is one of the five sub-specialties recognized by the American Board of Anesthesia eligible for certification. An anesthesiologist who specializes in pediatric anesthesiology provides anesthetic care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents undergoing surgical, diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. This sub-specialty also determines and provides appropriate pre-operative and post-operative care, advanced life support and acute pain management for the spectrum of pediatric patients.

A robust clinical and academic program has been designed for the fellows who will train at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center under the faculty of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia.
