Graduate Assistants - University Health Plan (UHP)
Saint Louis University Graduate Assistants and their dependent(s) may be offered coverage under the University Health Plan (UHP). Graduate Assistants should contact their department administrators to enroll for UHP coverage offered as part of a Graduate Assistant appointment.
NOTE: In the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year, the UHP will be transitioning administration of the plan's medical and prescription drug benefits to Aetna Student Health. Aetna Student Health will be assuming responsibility for identification card production, coverage verification, claims processing and prior-authorizations. This administrative transition will occur as members re-enroll within the 2014-2015 academic year.
As of 07/01/14, the UHP, with the assistance of SLU ITS, is actively routing to Aetna demographic data for those that have accepted FY 15 Graduate Assistant contracts that include health insurance coverage. Reports of Graduate Assistants that have had their demographics routed to Aetna will be available to department administrators. Upon reviewing the reports, departments will route eSeeIDOs to the UHP to pay for their respective Graduate Assistant(s) coverage .
Aetna will route Graduates Assistant identification cards via US mail.
If a Graduate Assistant prefers to waive the UHP coverage offered by their department, waiver documents should be routed to the Student Health Center as done in past years.
If Graduate Assistants need to enroll dependents or have an emergent need to enroll, paper enrollment forms (see below for llink to form) should be routed to the UHP Office, Med Campus, Caroline Building, C119. Payment for Graduate Assistant dependent coverage should be made through the SLU Marketplace (see link below).
Aetna will be routing Grad Asst identification cards to enrolled members. UHP expects a web based on-line card printing capability will be available early in July 2014.
Enrollment / Changes to Plan Elections: Eligible Graduate Assistants and their dependent(s) must enroll or request changes to plan elections (i.e. drop coverage) within 31 days of a "letter of appointment" date, during an Open Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period.
Special Enrollment Periods are provided when a qualifying event occurs (i.e. loss of other coverage, or acquiring new dependents through marriage, birth, or adoption). If enrollment or plan election changes are not completed within 31 days of the qualifying event, the enrollment or plan election changes may not be made until the next Open Enrollment Period. When UHP coverage is provided as part of a Graduate Assistantship, plan election changes should be initiated through department administrators.
Fall / Spring Enrollment: The links below provide access to resources that assist with UHP enrollment for Fall/Spring semester coverage offered as part of a Graduate Assistant appointment/contract.

Open Enrollment: Enrollment forms may be submitted in advance of Open Enrollment Periods. Upcoming Open Enrollment Periods for Graduate Assistants include:
Summer 2014: May 18, 2014 - Jun 30, 2014
Spring 2014: Jan 01, 2014 - Feb 14, 2014
Continuation of Coverage: COBRA continuation coverage, which is a temporary extension of coverage under the plan, can become available to a Graduate Assistant when UHP coverage would otherwise end because of a qualifying event. Qualifying events include, but are not limited to, voluntary or involuntary termination of employment/contract for any reason other than the assistant's gross misconduct, graduation and withdrawal. COBRA election forms and rate information are mailed by the UHP to Graduate Assistants upon contract termination.
If a Graduate Assistant's employment/contract is terminated but he/she will remain a Saint Louis University student, coverage may be continued by enrolling in the UHP as a Graduate Student. Contact the Student Health and Counseling Center at (314) 977-9178 for assistance with enrolling as a Graduate Student. Enrollment must be completed within 31 days from the loss of coverage provided through a Graduate Assistantship, during an Open Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period.
Possible alternatives to continuing UHP coverage include commercial health insurance plans and coverage sponsored by the Saint Louis University Alumni Association and made available to Saint Louis University graduates. Click on the link below for details:
