Graduate Assistants - University Health Plan (UHP)

Saint Louis University requires all full-time Graduate Students to have basic health insurance. Students accepting assistantships may be offered support for health insurance coverage provided through the University Health Plan (UHP). Graduate Assistants should contact their department to confirm the availability and extent of health insurance support. Assistantships provide support for a Graduate Assistant's health insurance coverage but not for coverage of a spouse or child dependents.

Full-time students that neither waive nor enroll by the end of the an Open Enrollment Period may be automatically enrolled and charged for UHP coverage.

NOTE:  As part of a new procedure for the 2015-2016 academic year, Graduate Assistants will enroll online through secure enrollment screens provided by Aetna Student Health.  The online enrollment screens will also be used for enrollment of a Graduate Assistant's spouse and/or child dependents. 

All applicable charges for the UHP coverage will be billed to one's student account.  Once charges for UHP coverage are billed, departmental support will be applied as a credit to your student account balance.

Please note that some assistantships may only provide health insurance support for a part of an academic year in which you are required to have health insurance.  Graduate Assistants will be responsible for UHP charges remaining after departmental support is credited.  Additional details regarding this new procedure are provided in the document below:

Enrollment/Changes to Plan Elections:  Eligible Graduate Assistants and their dependent(s) must enroll or request changes to plan elections (i.e. drop coverage) within 31 daysof a "letter of appointment" date, during an Open Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period.  To enroll in UHP coverage, Graduate Assistants must access Aetna's secure online enrollment screen provided below:

                         NOTE:  If you are not registered for classes, you will not be able to enroll online.

Waiver Instructions: To waive UHP and decline the departmental health insurance support, Graduate Assistants must access secure on-line waiver screens provided by Aetna Student Health, the UHP's administrative partner.  The waiver screens require students to enter details regarding their other (non-UHP) coverage.  UHP waivers completed online are only applicable to the academic year in which they are submitted.

Open Enrollment: Enrollment may be completed in advance of Open Enrollment Periods based on the availability of on-line enrollment screens.  Upcoming Open Enrollment Periods for Graduate Assistants include:

                         Summer 2016:    May 15, 2016 - Jun 30, 2016               Effective date:  May 15 

                         Fall 2016:            Aug 15, 2016 - Sep 30, 2016                Effective date:  Aug 15  

                         Spring 2017:       Jan 1, 2017 - Feb 14, 2017                   Effective date:  Jan 1   

Special Enrollment Periods: Special Enrollment Periods are provided when a qualifying life event (QLE) occurs (i.e. loss of other coverage, or acquiring new dependents through marriage, birth, or adoption). If enrollment or plan election changes are not completed within 31 days of the qualifying life event, the enrollment or plan election changes may not be made until the next Open Enrollment Period.  To enroll in UHP during a Special Enrollment Period, please contact the UHP Office. 

Continuation Coverage: COBRA continuation coverage, which is a temporary extension of coverage under the plan, can become available to a Graduate Assistant when UHP coverage would otherwise end because of a qualifying event. Qualifying events include, but are not limited to, voluntary or involuntary termination of employment/contract for any reason other than the assistant's gross misconduct, graduation and withdrawal. COBRA election forms and rate information are provided to Graduate Assistants upon contract termination.

If a Graduate Assistant's employment/contract is terminated but he/she will remain a Saint Louis University student, coverage may be continued by enrolling in the UHP as a Graduate Student.  Contact the Student Health and Counseling Center at (314) 977-9178 for assistance with enrolling as a Graduate Student. Enrollment must be completed within 31 days from the loss of coverage provided through a Graduate Assistantship, during an Open Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period.
