Graduate/Professional Students - University Health Plan (UHP)

Saint Louis University requires all full-time Graduate/Professional Students to have basic health insurance.   If a student already has other health insurance coverage in effect, then coverage under the University Health Plan (UHP) may be waived.  Full-time Graduate/Professional Students that do not waive UHP coverage must enroll and will be charged for UHP coverage during Fall and Spring semesters.  Summer coverage is optional.  Student-athletes participating in NCAA sports should contact the Department of Athletics to confirm if summer coverage is required for their sport.

Distance learners as well as Continuing Education and School for Professional Studies students are excluded from the requirement.  Study Abroad students are also excluded since they are required to enroll in either the International Insurance Plan or Sanitas Plan provided through Saint Louis University.

Graduate/Professional Students with a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester have the option to enroll for UHP coverage.

Waiver Instructions:  To waive UHP coverage, Graduate/Professional Students must access secure on-line waiver screens provided by Aetna Student Health, the UHP's administrative partner.  The waiver screens require students to enter details regarding their other (non-UHP) coverage.  UHP waivers completed on-line are only applicable to the academic year in which they are submitted.

NOTE:  If you are not registered for classes, you will not be able to waive online.

Enrollment/Changes to Plan Elections:  Eligible Graduate/Professional Students and their dependent(s) must enroll or request changes to plan elections (i.e. drop coverage) within 31 days of admission, during an Open Enrollment Period or during a Special Enrollment Period.  To enroll in UHP coverage during an Open Enrollment Period, Graduate/Professional Students must access secure on-line enrollment screens provided by Aetna Student Health.  Eligibilty for enrollment is based upon one's current registration status.   Enrollment may be completed in advance of Open Enrollment Periods based on the availability of on-line enrollment screens.

Important: Students awarded Graduate Assistanships that included health insurance coverage should follow enrollment instructions as provided by Graduate Assistant administrators.

Open Enrollment:  Enrollment may be completed in advance of Open Enrollment Periods based on availability of on-line enrollment screens.  Upcoming Open Enrollment Periods for Graduate/Professional Students include:

                         Summer 2015:          May 18, 2015 - Jun 30, 2015            Effective date:  May 18

                         Fall 2015:                   Aug 15, 2015 - Sep 30, 2015           Effective date:  Aug 15

                         Spring 2016:              Jan 1, 2016 - Feb 14, 2016              Effective date:  Jan 1

Special Enrollment Periods:  Special Enrollment Periods are provided when a qualifying life event (QLE) occurs (i.e. loss of other coverage, or acquiring new dependents through marriage, birth, or adoption). If enrollment or plan election changes are not completed within 31 days of the qualifying life event, the enrollment or plan election changes may not be made until the next Open Enrollment Period.  To enroll in UHP during a Special Enrollment Period, please contact the Student Health Center.

While Open Enrollment Periods carry set coverage effective (start) dates, effective (start) dates for enrollment and plan election changes requested within a Special Enrollment Period are based on the date of the qualifying life event.  Supporting documentation may be required to verify the qualifying life event.

Summer Enrollment:  On-line enrollment screens for Summer 2015 are no longer available.  Please contact the Student Health Center at (314) 977-2323 with any questions regarding Summer 2015 enrollment.

Continuation Coverage:  When student UHP eligibility would otherwise end due to events such as graduation, withdrawal, leave of absence or change in student status from full-time to part-time, Student Continuation Coverage, which is a temporary extension of coverage under the plan, can become available.  The length of Student Continuation Coverage shall not exceed six months from the date a covered individual no longer meets eligibility requirements.  All documentation and payments related to Student Continuation Coverage must be directed to the UHP Office.  See the election form below for important details, requirements and rates:
