Medical Students - University Health Plan (UHP)
Saint Louis University requires Medical Students to have basic health insurance. If a student already has other health insurance coverage in effect, then coverage under the University Health Plan (UHP) may be waived. If a student does not have other (non-UHP) coverage, they must enroll in the UHP. Charges for UHP coverage will be billed on one's student account.
NOTE: In the beginning of the 2014-2015 academic year, the UHP will be transitioning administration of the plan's medical and prescription drug benefits to Aetna Student Health. Aetna Student Health will be assuming responsibility for identification card production, coverage verification, claims processing and prior-authorizations. This administrative transition will occur as members re-enroll within the 2014-2015 academic year.
Medical students attending orientation on August 4, 2014 will have the option to enroll on-line with Aetna. Medical Students (and dependents) covered by UHP in FY 14 and continuing medical studies in FY 15 have had their demographic information securely routed to Aetna.
Aetna will be routing Medical Student identification cards to enrolled members. UHP expects a web based on-line card printing capability will be available early in July 2014.
To waive UHP coverage for the 2014-2015 academic year, students should follow waiver instructions presented below.
Waiver Instructions: To waive UHP coverage, a completed Health Insurance Waiver Form must be submitted along with evidence of other coverage in effect (a front and back copy of a current insurance card or a letter of verification from current plan). Evidence of other coverage must specifically list your name and a policy number. Completed Health Insurance Waiver Forms and evidence of other coverage documents are only applicable to the academic year in which they are submitted. Students that do not submit a Health Insurance Waiver Form and evidence of other coverage will be charged for UHP coverage.
Medical Students must submit Health Insurance Waiver Forms and evidence of other coverage to UHP Office located in the School of Medicine, Caroline Building, Room C119. The fax number for the UHP Office is 314-977-5667.
Enrollment/Changes to Plan Elections: Eligible Medical Students and their dependent(s) may enroll or request changes to plan elections (i.e. drop/waive coverage) during initial program orientation, an Open Enrollment Period or a Special Enrollment Period. Once enrolled, coverage will remain in effect until June 30th of one's graduating year, until one waives coverage or until one becomes ineligible for the plan.
Special Enrollment Periods are provided when a qualifying event occurs (i.e. loss of other coverage, or acquiring new dependents through marriage, birth, or adoption). If enrollment or plan election changes are not completed within 31 days of the qualifying event, the enrollment or plan election changes may not be made until the next Open Enrollment Period.
On-line enrollment capabilities will be made available early in July 2014.
Open Enrollment: Enrollment forms may be submitted in advance of Open Enrollment Periods. Upcoming Open Enrollment Periods for Medical Students include:
Fall 2014: Aug 15, 2014 - Sep 30, 2014
Continuation of Coverage: When student UHP eligibility would otherwise end due to events such as graduation or approval of withdrawal, Student Continuation Coverage, which is a temporary extension of coverage under the plan, can become available. The length of Student Continuation Coverage shall not exceed six months from the date a covered individual no longer meets eligibility requirements. All documentation and payments related to Student Continuation Coverage must be directed to the UHP Office. See the election form below for important details, requirements and rates:
Possible alternatives to continuing UHP coverage include commercial health insurance plans and coverage sponsored by the Saint Louis University Alumni Association. Coverage through the Alumni Association's program is available to Saint Louis University graduates. Click on the link below for details:
