DATE REVISED

SUBJECT Research Publicity
  1. Policy
It is the policy of the School of Medicine to encourage appropriate publicity on the results of research, either basic or clinical, after publication of these results in a professional journal or presentation at national professional meetings.
  2. Purpose
To encourage appropriate publicity while at the same time preserving the ability of faculty researchers to publish their results in professional journals and avoiding the notoriety and condemnation in the scientific community that might be associated with premature, inappropriate and possibly unethical publicity.
  3. Procedure
    1. Publicity must be handled through the office of University Marketing and Communications. All inquiries from the media should be referred to Ms. Nancy Solomon, Medical Center Director, to be certain that the publicity is handled properly and professionally.
    2. Publicity is considered secondary to the integrity of the research and its proper reporting. If there is any question concerning the propriety of a press release or other public relations effort, it is the responsibility of both the faculty member(s) involved and Marketing and Communications personnel to consult with the chairperson, or the chairperson's designate, prior to public announcements of research results.
  4. Reference
Research Planning Committee Minutes, February 9, 1995
  5. Rescission
    None
  6. Review Date
Reviewed annually and revised when necessary and appropriate.
