  1. Policy
    It is the policy of Saint Louis University School of Medicine to report all graduate medical education quality of care issues identified by the Claims Review Committee to the Graduate Medical Education Committee and to the appropriate department chairpersons.
  2. Purpose
    To insure that all graduate medical education quality of care issues identified in professional liability claims are reviewed by staff responsible for graduate medical education training programs, to insure that residents and fellows are appropriately functioning within the scope of their experience and training, and to identify clinical issues that lead to professional liability claims in order to recommend and design programs to reduce risk.
  3. Procedure
    1. The Director of Medical Legal Services shall report to the Claims Review Committee on a monthly basis all newly opened professional liability incidents, lien letters and lawsuits involving Saint Louis University School of Medicine residents and fellows.
    2. The Director of Medical Legal Services shall inform the department chairperson of all cases opened involving their department (both at the attending physician and training level) and shall request a written quality evaluation by the department chairperson or designee on each case opened. The department chairperson's evaluation shall be sent to the Director of Medical Legal Services in a confidential memorandum.
    3. On a monthly basis, quality of care issues identified by the department chairperson on claims opened shall be reported at the Claims Review Committee meeting. On a quarterly and annual basis, written analysis of the quality of care issues shall be reported to the Claims Review Committee by the Director of Medical Legal Services.
    4. The Director of Medical Legal Services shall report any issues identified by the Claims Review Committee necessitating further review of the involved training program or other corrective actions to the Graduate Medical Education Committee.
    5. The Graduate Medical Education Committee and/or a subcommittee thereof shall have the responsibility to review recommendations made by the Claims Review Committee and to request appropriate corrective action by the involved Program Director(s) including, but not limited to, counseling of the involved staff, restriction of responsibilities, enhancement of supervision, modification of existing and/or recommendation of additional educational programs to reduce risk.
    6. Follow-up actions taken by the Program Director(s) shall be reviewed by the Graduate Medical Education Committee and reported back to the Claims Review Committee through the Director of Medical Legal Services.
