Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The cardiothoracic surgery program at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine was the first to perform open heart surgery in Missouri and continues to be a leader in cardiothoracic care.

Our division is recognized nationwide as a leader in heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices and other areas of adult cardiac surgical care.

Thoracic Surgery

In thoracic surgery, our faculty members are renowned for their experience in video thoracoscopy, emphysema surgery, and their surgical expertise in benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus.

Our division is recognized nationwide as a leader in heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices and other areas of adult cardiac surgical care.

Cardiac Transplantation

Saint Louis University has a strong program in thoracic transplantation. The first successful lung transplant and heart transplant in the St. Louis area were performed SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital.

We have ongoing heart, lung, and heart/lung transplantation programs, as well as complementary programs in ventricular assist devices and lung volume reduction surgery. Both are nationally renowned.

This position is open to board eligible or board certified thoracic surgeons who have completed an accredited cardiothoracic residency program and want further training in this highly specialized field.
