Saint Louis University Middle School Education Degree OverviewSaint Louis University's undergraduate degree in middle school education prepares you teach students in fifth through eighth grades and for other careers in education. If you choose to major in middle school education at Saint Louis University, you will concentrate on teaching specific subjects such as language arts, math, science or social studies to middle school students. You will spend 21 credit hours in at least one of these areas and 12 focusing on another.
Students this program also learn special skills required to teach in a middle school setting and to help students in their late childhood and early teen years develop. Coursework in SLU's middle school education program covers behavioral management in middle school and teaching methods for inclusive classrooms.
Practicum experiences are required throughout the program, which culminates in a semester of courses dedicated to professional development and student teaching. You'll spend the greatest amount of time teaching in a private or public school setting during this semester.
What You'll Learn in SLU's Middle School Education Program
Students majoring in middle school education at SLU take courses in a specific sequence. The first block addresses issues related to classroom observation. You'll also study learning theory and examine schools as a social system, as well as learn about human growth and development.
The second block examines diversity in the classroom, learning styles, exceptionality and different styles of teaching. The remaining blocks are dedicated to methods of teaching subject matter areas and levels, diagnosing learning problems and developing learning activities. The program cumulates with a block dedicated to teaching in professional environments. To be accepted into the teacher certification program, students must meet certain academic requirements.
