Fewer complications, faster recovery

Many spine surgical procedures can now be accomplished using minimally invasive techniques that reduce incision size and are easier on the body. The benefits of minimally invasive procedures include less pain, less risk, quicker patient recovery and fewer complications. Intra-operative, image-guided neurosurgery, pioneered by SLUCare chief of spine surgery, H. Dennis Mollman, M.D., Ph.D., marries two technologies: infrared, 3-D computer imaging and X-ray stealth guidance. This technology allows the neurosurgeon to remove and repair malformed or damaged vertebrae through incisions only two or three inches long instead of the foot-long incisions common in traditional operations.

With minimally invasive surgery, patients can return to light activity within six weeks, rather than three months — the typical recovery time for traditional surgery.

Dr. Mollman, a St. Louis native, pioneered the minimally invasive techniques at the University of Minnesota's Spine Center. Now, he's using these skills to treat patients here in St. Louis as part of SLUCare Physician Group.
