SLU Named to 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
Saint Louis University has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the fifth consecutive year.
This honor is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and community engagement. The prestigious award honors exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
Service to others is a way of life at SLU. Not only a tenet of the University's Jesuit, Catholic mission, it is a choice that students, faculty and staff embrace, encourage and energetically support.
In October, SLU had one of its largest "Make A Difference Day" events, with more than 3,000 students, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends of the University volunteering at 130 sites across the St. Louis area. The 2011 SLU Relay for Life event was also recognized as the third largest collegiate Relay events in the nation, per capita, by the American Cancer Society.
Each year, SLU volunteers share hundreds of thousands of service hours in the metropolitan community and through spring break mission trips across the country and sometimes around the world.
From year round programs at the University's Campus Kitchen, Casa de Salud and the Health Resource Center to special events and projects throughout the year such as Relay for Life and the Blue Santa Service Leadership toy drive, volunteers are sharing their time, talent and spirit of community.
Just a few of the highlights include:
- From August to April, Campus Kitchen volunteers spent 3,656 hours recovering 32,445 pounds of food to deliver 19,927 meals to those in need.
- Since 2004, the SLU Relay for Life event has raised $1.25 million for the American Cancer Society of Eastern Missouri. Nearly $160,000 was raised during last year's event alone.
- According to recent survey, 84 percent of SLU students volunteer once during the year, which is well above the national average of 60 percent. Nearly half are regular volunteers, providing service multiple times a month.
