¡Zocaloca! Raises $400K for Casa de Salud
The money raised at the annual fundraising gala will help the health clinic continue to provide free care to immigrants in the St. Louis community.
More than 450 people came out to support Casa de Salud during the annual "¡Zocaloca!" gala Nov. 8 at Busch Student Center. The sold-out crowd raised nearly $400,000 for the community health clinic that Saint Louis University helped establish.
"The event bought the whole community together to support and celebrate the success of Casa de Salud," said Casa chairman and founder Bob Fox, who is also a member of SLU's Board of Trustees.
President Emeritus of SLU Lawrence Biondi, S.J., offered the invocation for the evening. Mark Wrighton, the chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis, and his wife, Risa Zwerling Wrighton, served as the event's honorary co-chairs.
During the gala, Francis G. Slay, mayor of the City of St. Louis, and Charles Dooley, county executive for St. Louis County, received Casa's 2013 Visionary Awards. Dwayne Butler, CEO of Peoples' Health Centers, was recognized with the 2013 Community Champions award.
KMOX Radio personality Charlie Brennan emceed a live auction. The event also featured music and dance performances, as well as an exhibit of Latin American artisanal handicrafts, jewelry and gifts.
