Chaifetz Arena Hosts Thousands for Back to School Festival
The annual event, hosted in part with St. Louis Public School District, brought more than 6,500 St. Louis-area students and families to SLU's campus.

More than 6,500 students and families from St. Louis flocked to Chaifetz Arena Aug. 2. to receive free school supplies and a meal as part of the St. Louis Public School District's Back to School and Community Empowerment Festival. This year marks the fourth consecutive season operators of Chaifetz Arena have partnered with the St. Louis Public School District to put on the event.
"It is always an honor to work with the Urban League and St. Louis Public School District on their Back to School and Community Empowerment Festival," said Jim Wynkoop, general manager of Chaifetz Arena. "This is an event that we have been involved with for the past four years, and we love being able to bring folks from the surrounding St. Louis community to SLU's beautiful campus for an event."
In addition to families receiving free school supplies and lunch, health screenings, family resources, games, live entertainment, and other prizes were distributed. More than 150 area organizations set up booths and tables on the Chaifetz Arena floor and throughout the concourse for the families including appearances by the Urban League, American Red Cross, St. Patrick Center, Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis, and the YMCA Head Start Program.
Events continue at Chaifetz Arena these next few months with the New Student Convocation on Friday, Aug. 22; Mass of the Holy Spirit on Thursday, Aug. 28; and the R&B Rendition featuring Joe and KeKe Wyatt on Sunday, Aug. 31.
